You Don't Know What You're Missing - Smite
Welcome to the fourth post in the "You Don't Know What You're Missing" series. Last time we looked at the tactical sniping game Sniper Elite V2. This time around we'll at a current Xbox One title: Smite.
What it is: A free-to-play third person MOBA pittings Gods from various pantheons against each other.
Why you didn't play it: Smite had a lengthy Beta and by the time the full game released on XB1, a number of other major releases were stealing its thunder. F2P is still a dirty word in gaming, often meaning low quality, pointless waiting, or pay-to-win schemes still regularly occuring. There's also a difficulty achievement list and the steep learning curve.
Why you really should play it: Smite is the rare free game that boasts quality and polish on par with (or better than) most retail titles. Graphics are bright and colorful, with gods having fanciful costumes and flashy powers. Characters bellow, shout, hiss, or purr out commentary as they throw powers back and forth, dueling with displays of might. The third person perspective is a great fit for a MOBA, as it puts you into the action and makes the action more immediate.
Gameplay is also spot on, though there can be a steep difficulty curve. There are a lot of allowances made for newer players, including single-player arenas to learn how powers work, and auto-leveling and auto-purchasing options to ensure powers and gear are equipped and keeping a new player moving forward. There's a ton of depth to Smite, with certain gods being easier to use, and other requiring more finese but bringing more specialized powers to bear. There's currently a whopping 71 characters playable in Smite, with more being added regularly.
Players who don't wish to spend any real money on the game are never forced to, as there are a number of gods always unlocked for play, as well as a rotating stable to keep things fresh. Other gods can be (eventually) unlocked in-game or purchased (individually or through an all-gods-pass). Other content like emotes, voice packs, and tons of costumes are available as well.
One More Thing: New content is also being added frequently, with a new pantheon scheduled to arrive early next year. Several new gods were added within the last few months, and new god-specific achievements are being included as well. That all this goodness is delivered free isn't just a good thing...it's divine.
