Fight Game: Rivals was released back in 2011 for Windows Phone from the Dutch developer Khaeon GameStudios. The previews sounded great, as the game was introduced as a turn-based strategy / fighting game with different Skill sets and Characters, of course. Is the game a mix between RPG, Strategy and Simulation or just a fighting mini game? We will find out in this short review.

    Gameplay

In the starting menu, you will only find one gameplay mode – Tournament. In tournament mode you can select from 9 fighters, they all share 3 different classes or attributes. The attributes are as follows: Strength (red), Dexterity (white) and Endurance (yellow). Each character has different class strengths and this will partially influence the fight as well. For example, if you have a fighter with high endurance attribute and fight against a character with low endurance attribute, your skills in the endurance class are more powerful. Within the 3 attributes, there are also attacks that not only will take away your opponent’s health, but also weakens their attributes for 2 rounds. In addition, there is also the blue class, which are all passive skills, as they will increase your attributes for 2 rounds.

When you selected your character, you can choose from 1 Tutorial level, 7 tournaments with 3 rounds and 2 tournaments with 4 rounds (with the bosses Sem Schilt and Alistair Overeem). You have to pay to participate in a tournament, that’s why it’s best to play them one after another.
But how does it play? Well, the genre “Simulation” used on this site is pretty far-fetched. It is turn based, yes, but there is not nearly enough depth in the game to play it more than 2 hours or to call it a simulation game. The attacks go 2 ways, as you can block your opponent’s attacks or your attacks will be blocked by the opponent (if you’re really poor at QTEs).

What disturbed me the most was that the attacking is exactly the same as the defending. So you will push the green dots at the right time over and over and over and over. There is no change whatsoever! Also the strategic part of the game, with the 3 different attributes has not a significant influence. You can win each fight without any problems, even if you don’t take advantages of the fighter's weaknesses.

    Graphics/Design

The graphics are not special at all, the background is a picture and doesn’t have any background movements. The fighters are all different, but they all move the same. Except the 2 cover stars (Sem Schilt & Alistair Overeem) which have their own movements, but you can’t control them.

    For Achievement Hunters

It’s an easy game. If you want to complete it, you will look at 8-12 hours of gameplay. Depending on your skill. If you just want to get as much points in as little time as possible, you will have an easy 150G in 1-2 hours. There is also an achievement for logging in on 10 consecutive days. You will fullfill this easily, while working towards winning every tournament with every fighter, but you can also use the date & time modification trick. Nothing more to say here.

liner bronsonSpot on. It gets tedious very quickly.
