13 Year Anniversary of My Gamercard
Buckle up and grab a snack, it's story time.

Today marks the 13th Anniversary since I created my current Xbox LIVE Gamercard, and brought in a new era of completing games. I'm going to try and not repeat too much information this time around, so if you want more parts to the story, read my previous blog posts. This is my 3rd Gamercard related to achievements. My first one wasn't focused and I was just collecting Gamerscore randomly. My 2nd one I wanted to fully complete every game, but boosted and therefore tainted my achievements and leaderboard scores and didn't feel legitimate (I should mention it is considered cheating by developers). So this one was for 100% completion without boosting and playing all modes fully legitimate the intended way. Over time the 100% achievement thing became an impossibility and not something I wanted to stress about. I still love completing things, but achievements have always only been a small part of that anyway. Almost no games cover all aspects of the game through achievements, and therefore are lacking. I make my own goals and lists to complete, if I really want to 100% a game. That being said, I still enjoying unlocking achievements and conquering difficult challenges.

I am also a gamer of all platforms. I have expanded my console collection greatly in the last decade, and have upgraded my PC to a decent level. If you want a more complete picture of my achievements and trophies, go to Exophase, a site that includes all platforms and has the option to manually add games that don't have online features to link.

The kinds of gaming experiences available have changed a lot since I started again with newfound focus 13 years ago, when I made my Endar of NTA gamertag on Xbox LIVE. Additionally, my life in general has gone through something like 6 eras since then. I've made adjustments to how I play games throughout those years, but haven't felt all that satisfied with the cadence of it since 2016. I've struggled to figure out all of the things that I want to do in a game, and then actually do them as well.

Here are some of the biggest offenders. The first, finding people to play older online games with. The second is server closures and removed content. The third is the scope of games made today. They are often made to be played in extreme excess to be able to fully complete it, asking players to reach for near-infinity.

That being said, as far as big modern multiplayer games go, I can't be bothered by ideas of completing them anymore. Because many of them these days aren't created to be completed anymore. They're made in a way that asks you to keep playing, and playing. And they'll continue to add to it indefinitely. They have seasons and timed content that you literally cannot ever complete if you start playing the game late. Along with that, microtransactions to try and make people pay for something that used to be included within the game in a fun way (through specific unlock conditions for the reward). I hope the industry turns in a better direction, but I fear things have progressed too far from the original vision and ideas the previous generations of developers often had: to simply make a fun, engaging, and impactful game. It's disappointing, really disappointing. The games that would have been my new favourites never will be, because they are infected with the parasites of microtransactions and extreme progression systems. Mostly these are multiplayer games. Single player games, indie games, and co-op games are often still free from the disgusting tendrils holding down the big multiplayer games. Any game that has microtransactions or near-infinite progression systems automatically will be reviewed by me at a lower grade than they would have been otherwise. It's heart-breaking to see the potential these games have, just to be ruined by the same nonsense that has been going on since the Oblivion horse armour. Fun fact, that's the only cosmetic microtransaction I've ever bought. And at that time it just seemed like DLC to me, and I wanted all of the DLC to be able to fully complete the game. Obviously I don't think that cosmetics count towards any kind of completion these days. Nevertheless, it's a wasted opportunity to have a microtransaction instead of having that content as unlockable rewards built into the game in a fun way, like games used to have. Fortunately this is mostly only for the big games on console. And I don't play mobile games for the most part because they are absolutely beyond filthy with money-sucking schemes. So yeah, I am jaded toward the game industry and big game releases from all of this.

Anyway, during the last year I reached out to more friends from my past, back when I was gaming hardcore from 2004-2010. It was awesome to reconnect with them. Certainly the greatest thing I gained from gaming are the friendships. It's regrettable that I didn't stay better connected with such important people to me. It's a work in progress and I intend to keep reconnecting and checking up on people. Of course I need to do this more with non-gaming friends too.

From now on I will speak to progress across all platforms. And instead of my yearly cadence I may do bi-annual, quarterly, or monthly updates to my progress, if I feel like writing about it. I made quite a bit of progress on my Crash Bandicoot Series 100% Quest again. The end is in sight, which will be done this year.

My focus going forward is to play more consoles and a greater variety of games, and being more consistent with multiplayer games I want to play more of. I only have two consoles remaining to get from the NES onward, those being the PS Vita and PS5. I'd like to get those soon, particularly when I get to a game I can only play on them. A Game Boy and Game Boy Advance SP would be nice to get as well, but I have other variants of those (Pocket and standard Advance).

I want to stop spreading myself so thin, and half-heartedly starting games on a whim. Not because I care if it's on my Gamercard (because if I intend to play it someday it's of minimal difference really), but because I want to stay engaged with what I'm already actively playing at the time.

Beyond gaming, I want to try a lot more new things. My life has felt a bit more stale the last half decade or so, and trying new things will lead me to a more fulfilling life, and hopefully better career and financial future. In turn, I think this can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Fortunately I've made good progress in this area within the last half year or so, and am feeling markedly improved and more optimistic.

As for my clan, Noise Tank Androids, most people aren't very active, or just not playing the same games in common anymore. So I don't have any particular plans to grow or change it. I'm content with it being a small group of friends. I do have one person in mind to invite, an old friend from secondary school times.

That being said, I do want to grow my friend circle of who I game with and be able to organise more gaming events and play sessions. Especially for older games like 360 games with dead servers. I'm currently working on the structure and format of it all, but it will most likely be a combination of Discord and Google Sheets. If you're interested in being a part of this, let me know. And it isn't limited to Xbox, but goes across all systems. I'd like to have a ranking system, prizes for special events, and rewards for consistent playing and helping with requests people have.

One huge change I want to fully realise is not thinking I have to restart things or get caught up in the how I'm completing games or in what order. Instead I want to fully shift my focus to why I'm choosing a specific game and making sure that's in line with my values and that I'm truly gaining something from the experience. That, and not overthinking every step of the way, stressing about what games I'm starting when, my lack of completions, and failed attempts at organising play sessions. I think this will reinvigorate my love for gaming and help me to actually accomplish the goals I set out to do.

In fact, for a while I have felt burnt out on games in general. When you continually fail to finish anything it becomes demotivational and can just snowball into a stressful experience lacking the fun, enjoyment, and rewards games should bring. Forcing myself to keep trying to enjoy and finish games seems to be counter-productive. So I'm working on a new approach. I may take a longer break from games than I have in recent times. Maybe then I'll regain the excitement I once had. Not to mention, I have a long list of things I want to, or ought to do outside of gaming. Getting some of those things done will no doubt bring some variety, progress, and excitement to my life.

That's it for my thoughts on it all right now. I will now give a few lists and statistics!

12 Year Anniversary of My Gamercard
Once again I find myself another year along in my gaming journey. This gamercard started in 2009, as my 2nd go at completion, and my third gamercard overall. You can read my previous blog posts to read more about how and why that all happened. Anyway, I'll do a more proper introduction, for those that don't know me.

I've been gaming for most of my life. At some point I wanted to beat games, and when achievements came out I got really into completion. I was already into completion before that, creating my own checklists for games. Achievements were another component to add to that. There were some years I became more relaxed about it, and less focused. I started a lot more things than I finished. This is also true outside of gaming. As I added more and more hobbies and interests to my life, my completion rate plummeted. Nevertheless, I have put it back into focus more this last half year.

Other than more things going on in my life, I think there are two main reasons why my completion rate changed. The first would be the change in achievements and games themselves. Games started having more achievements, less difficult achievements in general, more time consuming achievements (overly grindy things), the closure of online services (discontinued achievements), and dead online communities. The other would be my inability to stay focused and see things through. There are so many distractions with social media (YouTube in my case) and other online things, that I would often just go down rabbit holes online, not really getting things done. This affected pretty much all areas of my life, beyond just gaming. Furthermore, it still affects me even now at times. I have been focusing on improving by not getting distracted as much, the last two years. It has been fairly cyclical in nature, at times I am focused and getting many things done, only to return to distraction a week or two later. So it is certainly still a work in progress.

Outside of gaming I have been reading and writing more. Singing has been still less than a lot of previous years, but I practise occasionally. I moved just a couple weeks ago, so that has been exciting. My new living situation seems significantly better so far.

One thing I don't think I've mentioned in my previous posts is that I maintain a number of spreadsheets related to gaming. My gaming collection, my progress across various series of games, my overall gaming progress, a clan spreadsheet, and my progress with specific gaming partners. I really like to be organised in this matter, and at a few glances can capture the overall picture of where I'm at in gaming. I also have a fairly basic Discord server for my clan, Noise Tank Androids.

As for clan expansion, I have started looking for potential candidates to add to the crew. I have invited two people. I am pleased to announce that one of them, my old friend J Baby, joined the clan officially today. He's been a friend of the clan since I first met him in ~2007. It really has been tough finding people that are a good fit for my vision of NTA. But I will continue searching and expanding my views on who might make a good member. I'd like to give more people chances rather than just ruling them out early on, like I did in the past when I was in secondary school.

My frustrations with some of the AAA and major companies of the industry continue. Server shutdowns, Sony's recent announcement of PS3/PSP/PS Vita stores being closed (sooooo many delistings), microtransactions, and impossibly long multiplayer progression systems continue to plague the gaming landscape. I cannot say this is a golden age of gaming, despite some really quality games being released. The art in games is continuing to become more and more impressive. 4k and 60+FPS have been great experiences. But the glitches and systems within games aren't so hot. I am pleased with the improvements Xbox has been doing, with a focus on having the most powerful system, the improved controller, and an awesome backwards compatibility system. It was a bummer to have Halo Infinite be delayed, but I believe it's for the best, and the game will be much better for it. The biggest disappointment of the year was Bungie deleting the majority of Destiny 2, when they released the Beyond Light "expansion". I was very invested in the game, and feel that world and story is quite dear to me, only to have it ripped away and many parts of the series becoming unplayable and indefinitely gone. I tried to replay as much as I could, but did fall short due to turning focus to more important areas of my life during the final five weeks. I recorded a lot of footage, which will be my only way, and many peoples' only way of experiencing that content going forward. I couldn't keep playing the game with Beyond Light. I tried, but only managed a few missions. It was heartbreaking and devastating. After over 1000 hours in each Destiny game, I feel Bungie really did the fanbase dirty here. The worst part is that a lot of that community is complacent with it, and only cares about new content (literally "What is new THIS WEEK?!") kind of attitude. They have zero sense of game preservation, nostalgia, returning to old games, and having games playable for gamers who haven't come across it yet. This did open up my schedule to more things in my life though, which I am grateful for. Nevertheless, it's painful to even think about much. So I'll leave it there for now.

I'm still working on exactly what kind of recorded video and streaming content I want to do with gaming.

Here's a list of what I did since last year, across all of gaming, not just Xbox.
1. Played through Halo CE on MCC on Normal with angieepuu. This was her first time playing through a Halo game.
2. Finally finished Ninja: Shadow of Darkness with Sean. This game was about 3 years to complete. It was one of the most frustrating games I have played. When I completed it though, it felt very rewarding.
3. Legendary co-op on Halo 3 with Relix and VeNNoM. This was a great time, but something I've completed before. It's always fun to replay a Halo game after it's been a while.
4. Legendary co-op on Halo 3: ODST with Relix, Dust, and VeNNoM. Again, a fun time. I don't like this campaign as much as the other Halos, but it's still good. We later did the 4 sets on Heroic 4 player firefight achievements, and literally lagged out the first attempt with only 2 enemies remaining. We did it again, successfully, the next day.
5. 100% with all characters on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on PS1 with Sean. We raced for a character which I messed up by fumbling around on the Streets level after a smooth going on the previous levels. I also managed to get all tapes on each level in one run per level (not consecutively), which was a fun challenge! I feel my skills at the game have improved immensely since my last time playing in 2014.
6. Pokemon Sword Isle of Armor Expansion with angieepuu. This was an enjoyable time, as always. I quite liked the story and idea of it all. I do wish fights could have been harder, and perhaps a restriction on the Pokemon you could use just for this story. But I can see how that would have been very hard to implement without restricting the normal game too much.
7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 with Sean, 1 character. Another fun game to revisit!
8. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (PS1) with Sean, 1 character. Well, this game isn't the best on PS1, and that was quite evident.
9. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 100% career with a character. This turned out to be an absolutely fantastic remake of two great games from my childhoood. Honestly top tier gaming right here. I played a good amount online too. I look forward to returning to it.
10. Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage with Sean. This game was better than I anticipated. Not a usual Crash game, but fun nevertheless. I can't 100% it until I play the partner Spyro game to trade the in-game cards.
11. Crash Boom Bang! on DS with Sean. Yikes. This turned out to be the worst game I've ever played to completion. I won't go into detail here, but you've been warned. It's a bummer that this is a big mark on the Crash series. It's the only one I've disliked.
12. Gears of War 4 Hardcore co-op with Tai. This was a great time. It was fun to finally playthrough another game with my old friend Tai. Also, this was only my 3rd playthough of the game, so it was cool to become more familar and better at it.
13. Crash Nitro Kart on GBA with Sean, 100%. This was a fun game. It was hard for my eyes to figure this game out. Unlike the 3D kart racers, this one is classic style, like Super Mario Kart. It was better than I expected, but I definitely still prefer the console version.
14. Shark Tale on PS2 with angieepuu, game beat. Wow....probably my 2nd least favourite game I've beaten. This was way too hard for a seemingly kid's game, and definitely lives up to the infamy of games based off of films. I recommend it to masochists and Shark Tale superfans. Everyone else should probably stay clear of this one.
15. Geometry Wars 3 (One) 100%, finally. I got 3 stars on all of those Hardcore levels, definitely bringing my skill level up. Collecting the geoms was a bit of a grind, taking a few more hours than I anticipated, but improving my leaderboard rankings across numerous levels was a fun time.
16. Arcade Game Series: Pac-Man all achievements. Finally. Only took a quick 30 minute play session. Should have just done this ages ago.
17. Overcooked! 100% playthough with angieepuu in one sitting. After building our skills in our first playthrough a few years ago, we absolutely crushed it this time, getting 3 stars on most levels first try. We also got through a handful of levels on the 2nd game as well. I look forward to playing the Xbox Series X remaster of both games.
18. Pokemon Sword Crown Tundra Expansion with angieepuu. We haven't finished this yet, but have done most of the story I believe. Decent expansion overall, with some funny moments.
19. Crash of the Titans (GBA) with Sean. My most recent completion. This game was decent. One of the weaker Crash games overall, but still a fun time. Only one more variant of this title to go, which I will be starting soonish!
20. Assassin's Creed Valhalla ~40 hours into it. This is a fantastic game, and I'm quite liking the story. The exploration stuff is taking quite a while though.
21. Halo Master Chief Collection clan events. These have been a great time and have been pretty consistent. I'm hosting a Free-For-All (Rumble Pit, Lone Wolves) tournament league for the clan leading up to Halo Infinite. We start next week and I am highly looking forward to it.
22. I got into Pokemon GO, really for the first time seriously, though I did briefly play it when it came out. With a much better phone (that doesn't constantly freeze) it has surprising been a fun game, despite some of the issues I have with the live service and microtransactions stuff with it. It probably wouldn't be nearly as fun to play if I wasn't playing it with angieepuu, as well as my sister & brother-in-law sometimes too.

As you can see, a lot of progress has been made towards 100% completion of the Crash Bandicoot series, which has been my long quest over the last few years. I want to dabble in the mobile games, but some are probably unplayable, and they all seem tricky to find and set up. It's not a huge priority as they don't really count as true parts of the series in my eyes. I will play the new Crash Bandicoot Run game that came out on mobile recently though. Expectations are low though.

I want to keep trying to get groups together to play older online games. If anyone reading this has interest, let me know! It's important for me to play online games that I like before their servers shutdown. The big ones this year are the 360 Halo games, being partially shut down in December (all matchmaking, quite a few achievements).

I look forward to gaming with my usual partners, and hopefully making some news ones too. Bring on another year.

11 Year Anniversary of My Gamercard
Here we are again! 11 years ago I created my gamercard, the one I decided would be my last! Prior to this one I had my first two accounts (NTAEndar and Xx NTAEndar xX). I knew I wouldn't want to restart again, so I had to make this one count.

First, here is the back story on why I created multiple gamercards. My first one NTAJTD > NTAEndar, I started in 2004 for Halo 2. I played pretty much only Halo 2 online for Xbox, then when Xbox 360 came out I gained interest in achievements. So I went for achievements and gamerscore, just in general.

Then I felt inspired to complete all of the games I start. Nobody I knew had done this yet, as it was still early in the 360 era....like 2007 I think. Unfortunately my old gamercard already had many things on it I didn't feel I wanted to, or could complete (I probably could have though...). So I started the new gamercard, Xx NTAEndar xX, with the purpose of unlocking 100% achievements for every game I start. But this obsession with achievements led me down a path of "boosting" games. Essentially not actually playing the game but still getting the achievements. Eventually this bothered me more and more, feeling like I was wasting hours of my life essentially doing nothing, and messing up my in-game stats in the process. The only good thing to come from boosting was some of the people I met, and funny times we had. Anyway, I knew I had to start fresh, to really be 100% legit, and enjoy games in the way they're meant to be played.

So I started the new gamercard, Yx DPEndar xY. DP was meant to be a new group dedicated to 100% completion, 100% legit. When I say 100% I mean 100%, not just the achievements, but everything the game has to offer. It was odd not to have NTA in my gamercard and created confusion in my clan. It also didn't represent my continued dedication to NTA. So I changed it to Yx NTAEndar xY. I completed many games, starting with Halo 3, one of the greatest Xbox 360 games. But it was so restrictive. I couldn't start any games that had unreasonable online achievements (of which there are quite a few). I realised that this was negatively affecting the way I play games, and the enjoyment I could have from them. So after years of avoiding those games, I became more lenient with what I started, and was actually annoyed with achievements for a bit. I turned off notifications and carelessly started lots of games. Not a huge problem, but I've come to know my motivation and focus is a lot worse when I have many things started, left unfinished.

Then came server shutdowns, and delistings. This made it impossible to complete some games I had started, and even more that I would want to start in the future. So I pondered how I would proceed. I went back and forth with this for a while, until it became literally impossible to complete some of the games on my card (I think Game Room may have been the first one). Then I decided to just do what I can, and not worry about what I can't do.

Then came dead online communities. Even games that were popular in the past became ghost towns and I realised completing the online components of games, or even just experiencing them briefly would be extremely tough. Nearly everyone who plays games legitimately are playing more modern games, not the older stuff. I did make a group for Gears of War 1 that played weekly, and I got close to unlocking Seriously... for this account as well. But am still a little short on that. I suppose to play any of these games online in this day and age will require finding a group passionate about retro online gaming. People who like older games and want to experience them naturally online. If you are such a person, who wants to play Xbox 360 games online naturally, please message me about it!

Not to mention we don't know when servers will shut down. It's possible the entirety of Xbox 360 servers will be shut down for good at some point (maybe a year after Xbox Series X comes out?). I hope not, but I don't really know the costs of maintaining them.

Back to the story. So I decided I would shoot for as much as I can in each game., with the understanding I won't be able to do much online stuff for the older games. My best friend and secondary leader of NTA, Relix, started a new gamercard in 2014, as he lost access to his Yx account, and just wanted a fresh start. So he made Relix of NTA, and I soon changed mine to Endar of NTA, to be more clear about my name.

Here's a list of what I did since last year, across all of gaming, not just Xbox.
1. Completed Overcooked 2, 3 stars every story level with angieepuu
2. Beat Hard Adventure on Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled (PS4)
3. Beat the campaigns of Gears of War UE, 2, 3, Judgment, 4, and half of 5 with angieepuu
4. Completed Crash Twinsanity (Xbox) 100% with Sean
5. Beat Gears 5 campaign Insane co-op first playthrough with Relix
6. Completed Crash Tag Team Racing (PS2) 100% with Sean
7. Beat Destiny 2: Shadowkeep story
8. Completed Crash of the Titans 100% with Sean
9. Beat Pokemon Sword story with angieepuu
10. Completed Crash: Mind Over Mutant 100% with Sean
11. Completed Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure (GBA) 100% with Sean
12. Completed Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced (GBA) 100% with Sean
13. Beat Crackdown 3 story with Relix
14. Completed Crash Nitro Kart 100% with Sean
15. Played in all 8 Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled Grand Prix's, getting all of the rewards from each
16. Beat all 39 Velo time trials in Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled
17. Completed Hard Adventure 100% on Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled (X1)
18. Beat Contra co-op with Marx0r

So yeah, obviously I made huge progress this last year on my quest to 100% all Crash Bandicoot games. I played nearly the entirety of Gears of War campaigns with angieepuu. I played 4 games at release, Crackdown 3, Gears 5, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, and Pokemon Sword.

So where does that leave us today? Well I mostly only play games with angieepuu, Sean, Relix, and VeNNoM these days. I would like to get a group going to play more old games online. I would like to finish, as well as start, many of the games I've procrastinated on.

I think I've been able to balance my hobby of gaming better in the last year. I've gotten more into other hobbies like reading, writing, and studying psychology, so I have to make sure I'm still giving attention to those things. Once my ankle injury is better and the quarantine is lifted I want to resume taekwondo and weight lifting.

I definitely want to share more of my gaming story in written and audio form in the future. I plan to make my completion of games better by starting less, and finishing more, with a goal of 95-99% (haven't actually figured out all of the ones I can't do).

Again, let me know if you're interested in co-op or multiplayer for Xbox 360 games! Thanks for reading!
