I actually had some trouble with this...

Kept getting around 80,000 but this was before I realised you could press Y, then X, B or A when prompted to go around the inside of the wave.

This along with the multipliers within the waves helps you increase your score massively.

Several goes after I realised this I was on 121,000 so it is certainly do-able - just keep at it...
