Complete the first (tutorial) mission. This mission is very easy - just do some stunts and then shoot down some slow, easy fighters that barely shoot back. You might want to avoid the stunt marker by the wind turbine if you just got the game since it's easy to crash into the turbine blades. Most of the others are easy.

You'll want to try the different control schemes out in this mission - arcade vs. simulation. I find the arcade controls to be annoying so I use the simulation setting.
