Outside of the general tips in the guides for this achievement, I really just wanted to get this one out of the way in a speedy fashion with a detailed roadmap. I was trying for Supplier and Mage Hunter also, but in the end just concentrated on Rival. As such I kept track of the rivalry for Varric, Bethany, Merril, and Anders, Anders came out ahead. This guide will give you the required 100 rivalry points with Anders and the achievement during Act 1 in the quickest way I found.

Spoilers all through this guide.

Start a new game, and to be on the safe side, just be a bastard to everyone. Run through the prologue and do whatever you wish up until Act 1 actually starts. To make it easier for yourself, do not fall for getting a few levels in by way of the fetch-mission quests. There is some serious level-scaling going on, so the lower the level, the quicker you will clear the fighting portions.

OK, on to the fun. Starting with Varric and Bethany just after having talked to his brother at the start of Act 1, head for Lowtown and the Hanged Man to talk to Varric for the Main Plot mission A Business Discussion. This will unlock the other Main Plot missions you need.

Now you need to recruit Anders first of all. Get started on Tranquility via Lirene’s Fereldan Imports, then visit him in his Clinic in Darktown. Know that nothing you do or say affects Anders disposition until Tranquility is fully complete and he can join your party. Include him and head to Sundermount to get started on Main Plot: The Long Way Home. Once you’re through the passage, Merril will bring down the barrier and you get your first important dialogue:

“It did help us”
+10 Rivalry with Anders

Once The Long Way Home is complete, you are in Kirkwall in the Elven Alienage again. Turn around and talk to Arianni, starting the Main Plot: The Wayward Son.

“You’re in over your head.” - “I will stop him” - “Don’t hold your breath.”
+ 5 Rivalry with Anders

Speak to Thrask in the Gallows, then Samson in Lowtown at night, and then enter the private dock at the Docks at night. Open the chest and get the Letters. Head to Danzig in Darktown. Pick up the map to the Wounded Coast and head out to the Slaver Caverns and finally meet Feynriel.

“She’s Right” - “You’re a mage” - “Go to the Circle”
+15 Rivalry with Anders

Head back to Lowtown and speak to Arianni for an automatic:

+5 Rivalry with Anders

We’re on a roll. Head to the Gallows again and speak to Thrask with the letters we picked up during Wayward Son, for the quest The Errant Letter.

“I have a letter for you.” - “Pay me, or I’ll expose you.”
+5 Rivalry with Anders

Now you need to head home to Gamlen’s House and read the letter from the writing desk to start the quest Act of Mercy and then head to Wounded Coast Approach. Find Thrask and:

“What’s this about?” - “Do it yourself”
+5 Rivalry with Anders

Progress until you meet Alim.

“So, they’re using blood magic.” - “Turn yourself in.”
+5 Rivalry with Anders

Find and kill Decimus, then talk to Grace.

“He was a blood mage.” - “The crimes are also yours.” - “I won’t help you”
+10 Rivalry with Anders

Head back outside and talk to the Templars.

“Here are your blood mages.” - “The mages are yours.” - “You must go with him.”
+15 Rivalry with Anders

Follow up the rumor Enemies Among Us to start that quest. Head to Hightown and to the Chantry to speak with Macha. This conversation have no effect on Anders so answer what you wish. Head to the Gallows and talk to the Templar Recruits. Off to Wilmod’s Camp.

For the next part it is crucial that you have Bethany and Anders in your party. Head to the Blooming Rose in Hightown at night. Talk to Viveca, then head upstairs to Idunna.

“Drop the act.” - “You’re really persistent.” - “I heard a rumor”
“Sister, help me!” - “Tell me everything. Now.” - “You go to the Templars.”
+5 Rivalry with Anders

Make sure to add Merril to your party at this point. Head to Darktown, find the Sanctuary and wade through to the end. Kill Tehrone and talk to Keran.

“Is he possessed, Merril?” - “I have to tell the Templars”
+5 Rivalry with Anders (only if Merril checks for possession)

Back to the Gallows to talk to Cullen.

“You’re right.” - “You can’t take any chances.”
+15 Rivalry with Anders

And voila, Rival unlocks with a few points to spare. If you know of a quicker way, or of any rivalry bonuses along the way, let me know in the comments and I’ll update.
