You start the game off with the handgun. Whenever possible, I would recommend not using the handgun and use any of your other weapons to work towards their achievements. Main reason being, when you hang from a ledge, the only gun you have access to is the handgun and birds can be plentiful around ledges for easy killings which helps you work towards the Hangman achievement.
