**Be aware this solution contains slight story spoilers.**
The Tsuchinoko is an invisible, mythological, and undetectable snake that can be found in any area in the game. They can be captured only by mouse trap. The easiest way to find it is this:
During Virtuous Mission, in Rassvet after the cutscene where Snake fights Ocelot, be sure to pick up his unconscious body and drop it to frisk him. He will drop the first mouse trap in the game. Lay it somewhere in the area, and it will be there when you come back in Operation Snake Eater. I usually pick a spot underneath the building, just to be safe. Be sure to retrieve it when you come back!
The easiest place to capture the Tsuchinoko is Bolshaya Past South (the area with the electric fences prior to the Ocelot duel), because no other animals spawn here. Place the mouse trap on the ground and go a fair distance away (If this is your first time in this area, be careful of the claymore mines on the ground). After waiting 5-6 minutes, the trap should spring. If it doesn't, pick it up, set it again, and try walking farther away. Eventually it will spring. The achievement will pop as soon as you pick it up.
*Note: Some people are reporting the mouse trap not appearing during Operation Snake Eater. If you have this issue, head north to Bolshaya Past Base. Inside the house, in the same room the Kerotan is located, there is another mouse trap hidden under the bed. Thanks to BloodwCinnamon and The Dauntless for this info.
Also, capturing the Tsuchinoko counts towards obtaining the MARKHOR rank for the "King of the Jungle" achievement.
There will come a point in the game where Snake loses all of his inventory, including the tsuchinoko. After meeting with EVA in Tikhogornyj: Behind Waterfall and retrieving your gear, head back out of the falls to Tikhogornyj, not too far from the falls should be your Tsuchinoko, in plain view. Tranq him and keep him with you for the rest of the game. Doing so will unlock the Infinity Face Paint, which not only gives you unlimited ammo in all subsequent playthroughs, but counts towards your facepaint collection for the "Only Skin Deep" achievement.
**Please note: this is NOT a second tsuchinoko. It is the one you previously captured. If you did not have a tsuchinoko in your inventory prior to it being confiscated, there will not be one in this location.
