This achievement is for gathering 900,000 gems. This is cumulative, so don't be afraid to spend your gems. On top of that, this will come naturally, before you finish all the stages and before you do most of the secondary stuff like finishing all stages on chaos and the like.

The biggest factor in how many gems you get seems to be how many officers/peons you kill. If you only kill a few, you won't get much. Kill a lot, you'll get a lot.
