As stated in the other solutions, you start blank (level 1 character with basic equipment) and can't save.
If you are not going for points, put this on easy. Now, there is a strategy in dying repeatedly as you level up (to max 35) every time you leave the arena even if you don't actually kill anything. I got to wave 8-9 and kept dying.
Put your upgrade points into magic to unlock level 3 IGNI and also anything that updates vigour and vitality (and dodge to level 2 helps). Also, with acquired orens buy moon runes to improve sign damage. With a suitably beefed up IGNI with as much damage power as possible (max out the 3 top areas of Magic) the rest becomes a breeze - Cast out all your fireballs, roll away and repeat, and when full use adrenaline to slow time to take away larger enemies (like Golems).
If you have spare upgrade points after this go for Combat Acumen for group finishers - a full health golem down in one go!
Hope this helps - I didn't get much luck Aard-ing people off the edge and Axii was difficult to pull off in groups but fireballs sorted everyone out!

Beat wave 30, doesn't matter how many times you die, thank god! The arena mode has nothing to do with the main game, you start with level 1 and low equipment and everything's reset when you exit, so you have to do it in one go, the max. level is 35. Each wave you beat you will get a reward of choice between 3 items such as weapons, armor and upgrades, and even if you die you will get a level up so that's very good!
Using this method should be helpful:
First, upgrade the abilities which increase your vitality and vigor/vigor regeneration during fight, but most important is the footwork ability in the swordsman tree, it gives you 200% faster rolling. For the magic tree, upgrade the QUEN sign and IGNI sign abilities. Do as you wish for the rest but don't waste points in the alchemy tree, it's unnecessary.
As well you should now that in the arena you can't obtain any other of the achievements which require you to get those special abilities or killing a guy with his own arrow etc. so don't waste points for this.
So far, now when you are in battle, cast the QUEN sign which gives you protection from 1-2 hits and deals some damage to enemies when you get hit. Everytime you actually get hit, roll back and cast it again (if your vigor is out just run around to regenerate but should be no problem if you upgrade your vigor abilities) and use ROLLING!!! As much as you can! When you are facing bigger hordes of enemies, like the loads of Nekker wave, cast some IGNI sign spells at them this should be destructive! (provided you have the ability to harm more enemies at once). The hardest enemies are the ones which are blocking you, so always kill the weaker enemies first, then try to roll around them and attack them from behind.
If you have problems with some waves just buy an ally with the earned money. And keep in mind that steel swords are better for human enemies and silver swords better for monsters, even if the stats say otherwise.
