Many of the skills will be unlocked just by playing through the game and trying for 'S' ratings. If a given mission is too difficult, skip it and try again in a couple levels. You will reach level 10 long before unlocking all skills, so there’s no sense in beating your head against the wall. Here are some general tips for unlocking some skill categories, followed by some specific tips for certain difficult unlocks.

>> Loadout. My favorite loadout for unlocking skills where the weapon isn’t specified is:
- Main: Plasma Ray. Hits fast and hard, what’s not to love?
- Sub skill: Phantoma Vision++. Fairly high damage, medium target area, and low Willpower cost. You lose two health, but that’s not a huge deal later in the game.
- Action skill: Therapia, or Therapia+ for longer missions. Action skills are more situational, though, so this gets swapped for specific missions as needed.

>> Weapon-based skills. Example: Plasma Ray – “Clear World 2 using the Fire Cannon as the Main Skill”
Fairly straightforward, just have the correct weapon selected. It’s important to note that you just have to have the correct weapon in the main skill slot – it’s perfectly acceptable to use your sub skill or action skill to do the killing. For the Ray skills, these are a cakewalk, since those are the best all-around weapons. For Vision skills, you’ll probably want a Ray sub skill for tougher bosses. Shot skill missions were a pain, since it’s tough to clear anything quickly with them. I usually used a Vision sub-skill with low Willpower cost like Phantoma Vision++ to clear most enemies and the Shot for tough slow-movers, but occasionally used a cheap Ray sub skill like Chain++ and ignored the primary as much as possible.

>> Rank-based skills. Example: Massive Boson – “Clear ‘The Hestrine Triple’ with Rank B or higher”
Rank for missions (that are not just boss fights) is primarily based on number of enemies killed. If you kill 90% of the available enemies in a level, you’ll probably get an ‘S’ ranking. Not all possible enemies will appear if you kill earlier waves too slowly, so it’s helpful to take a fast-killing sub skill to clear out waves of smaller enemy as quickly as possible. These are good to come back to later in the game – a mission that you can barely get a rank ‘A’ on at level 5 will be an easy ‘S’ at level 7.

>> Point-based skills. Example: Insectagyra – “Clear ‘The Hestrine Triple’ with more than 400000 points”
Points are based primarily on combos. The same rule about killing waves quickly applies here, but it’s more important to hit the first enemy of a new wave right away to keep the combo going. On more difficult challenges, you’ll need to learn where the next wave is coming from so you can be targeting that area before the enemy appears. If the new wave starts with weaker enemy, Vision skills are great for tagging them right away, but if they’re tougher enemy, you’ll need to be tapping the entry point in advance so your Ray can target them ASAP. There are several large creatures that are combo-breakers – they take a very long time to fly onto the screen, and longer to kill, so the combo usually stops there. However, several of these large creatures have a handful of smaller creatures that arrive at about the same time. If you’re careful about killing one of those every few seconds while hammering on the big guy, you can sometimes keep the combo alive. Note that your death animation and using a jewel to stay alive does not advance the combo timeout – it’s quite possible to die in the middle of a wave and keep the combo going.

>> Tough missions. These are a few missions that can be more challenging than others in their class.

- Nemesis Vision+ – “Clear ‘Exploration Impressions 2’ with more than 27000000 points”. This mission is actually very easy, just boring. When you fight the Glyrin (first boss, spider), do not attack him, just dodge his initial arm thrust. After that, he’ll start spewing out groups of pink bubbles. Keep hitting the bubbles without hitting Glyrin and build your combo. It will cap out at 999, but you should be over 20 million by that point and getting big score from each bubble. You will go past zero on the timer, but don’t worry – you can still finish, and the score will build faster than it goes down. Once you have your score, just finish the remaining levels.

- Nemesis Vision++ – “Clear ‘The Ultimate Test’ with more than 25000000 points”. Same strategy as above. Glyrin’s bubbles now produce a poisonous gas when popped, so it’s a little more work to weave between the clouds. If this is too much of a hassle, you can do the same combo farming with Orkinuss (floating whale) – just keep killing the birds at the start of the level without hitting him. They give less points than the bubbles, so it’s a fair bit slower, but pretty safe.

- Broad Vision+ – “Clear ‘Planet Draco Tour: Continued’ with more than 100000000 points”. I found this mission very challenging. As stated above, points are all about maintaining the combo. There are a long few sections in particular that allow for a very large combo to build. If you miss a wave in one of these and break the combo, you may as well go back to base and restart – you won’t be able to make up the points. One additional note besides the tips in the Point-based skills section: Combos can span levels. If you have a combo building at the end of a level and immediately hit the first wave as soon as it appears, the combo will continue. This is crucial for unlocking this skill. There are a couple of points, particularly in the first two levels, where it’s actually possible to kill all the enemies too quickly, causing a 2-3 second dead zone at the end of the level. This will break the combo, so you may need to spread out the last few kills when the end of the level is near.

- Broad Vision++ – “Clear ‘True Planet Draco Tour’ with more than 100000000 points”. Same strategy as Broad Vision+. Enemies are level 3 now, so some areas where I used Vision sub skills to clear are now all Plasma Ray.

- Kurtz Vision+ – “Clear ‘Air of Despair 2’ with more than 750000 points with Main Skill using Lightning Roar”. Nasty mission, with little room for error. Use a Ray sub skill that allows you to get a 34 combo on the small dragons at the start. You have to hit the last one as soon as it appears, before the mortars take it out. Plasma Ray++, Chain Ray++, or Homing Ray++ all work well for this. Keep Lightning Roar on the Dark Phantom constantly. Memorize his pattern so you track him the whole time he’s firing, even if you take a few hits to do so. When he stops for laser, start at the top of the screen and wait until the last instant before he fires to drop to the bottom. Rinse and repeat. If you’re very low in health, you might want to consider getting hit by the pink mortars between rounds so you can use a jewel and continue without losing lightning time. If you do this right, he should be almost finished by the 3rd set of lasers and you should just barely have 2 Willpower. Fire Point Arkus twice as soon as he goes into his final 5-ball attack to push your points over. An alternative way to do this is to use Plasma Ray++ during his swooping attacks, counting on the extra time saved to boost your score.
