Best way to farm money (as well as beat all levels on HOT difficulty) is to play with a co-op partner.

Expanding on MetalHeadBatman's solution, purchase both shotguns as soon as possible and fully upgrade both. These are the best two weapons in the game aside from the Hair Dryer. I have found precision weapons to be less effective as the enemies run around way too quickly to aim down the sights. Once the Hair Dryer is unlocked play on Inferno difficulty as you will get a ton more money (see below).

Here are some tips that will help with unlocking all upgrades (and essentially completing the game 400/400:

1. The semi-auto is essentially your ranged weapon, and of the two shotguns the one you will be using the most. Until you get the Hair Dryer, the pump action will the the one you use against the big Deados and the car door Deados. The Hair Dryer works as a machine gun (sort of) and will make quick work of the enemies.

2. Do challenges as much as possible, and always do maps on Hot difficulty. Some challenges will be tough to complete but for the most part are doable even on Hot.

3. Select Duel bet every time. For the win every bet achievement do that on a lower difficulty. If possible find a dedicated partner to run through these with and alternate Duel wins each run. One player will get 22k gold while the other will get around 36k from the multiplier. On Inferno difficulty one player will make 72k while the other will make 129k!!!

4. Play on The Vault level. Me and my partner found this map the easiest as there is a small room on the upper level with an ammo box and two hallways where the enemies will run through aside from the stairs. Average run on this level is about 10-15 minutes.

5. The final wave of each run consists of a criminal. The criminal is a random Deado with special abilities. Make sure you and your partner take out any snipers and big Deados BEFORE engaging the criminal. If you want to execute the criminal easily unload a full clip of your semi-auto into his head.

6. WATCH YOUR AMMO AND HEALTH AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep track of all the ammo boxes on whatever map you play. You WILL be running out of ammo on your weapons VERY quickly. When you are close to being downed your screen will turn black and white and you will hear a heartbeat sound.

7. Exploit the invulnerability. What this means is that certain actions will cause your character to not take any damage or be hit by melee, sniper bullets, etc. Rolling is your best friend, and many times you can even fully recover health just by rolling around. Sometimes you will still get hit, often by melee, but it is a very useful tool in escaping mobs of enemies and sniper line of sight. If your partner is down be sure to pick him up as fast as possible, and both of you are invulnerable while reviving so that gives enough time to roll out of harms way. Finally, when a big Deado or criminal knocks you down you are also invulnerable until you get back up.

8. Save up for the last killstreak (ethereal spikes) as much as possible. Not only does this clear up most of the map, but the kills from it still fill your killstreak bar, giving you up to the first two killstreaks automatically.
