Easiest way to do this is to start from level 9 and clear it as quickly as possible without dying. When you start level 10, only get the first laser upgrade (the one that fires up as well as along) and grab all the other goodies until another weapon upgrade lands. It's VERY important that you leave it alone where it is as you'll need it later.

Grab a tank of fuel (so you can take an extra hit without dying) and do NOT drop it off at your spaceship. Now all you have to do is stand on the ground, about half way over on the right hand side between the two higher platforms and keep shooting everything like a lunatic until your oxygen runs out. You'll rack up loads of points and even extra lives.

When your oxygen runs out and you die, quickly fly to the weapon upgrade you left earlier, grab your fuel tank again and repeat the process. Don't forget to use your nukes if neccessary.

My score using this method is around 2.5 million which is ranked 150 in the world, and I haven't even played the game since 2007! Just thought I'd put this here for you achievement hunters after reading the other guide which basically says "shoot baddies, don't die". Great job mate, that goes for every shoot 'em up ever created surely? >_<

Good luck TA ers :)
