There's octave and there's pitch, don't confuse the two or you're going to have a hard time. Find a register you're comfortable singing in, a song or voice you can imitate easy and sing in that style for all the songs. You may hear "Tom Sawyer" being sung in a very high octave, but you must only match the pitch, so you could sing it like Barry White and 100% it if your register matches Barry's more than Geddy's.
There may be some parts that get really high in pitch, for this you use falsetto. This is when you use that high voice that people use when they talk to a puppy or a kitten to seem less aggressive, and you will be able to hit more pitches in this register but it might make you feel stupid if your football-loving jock friends are around. If your voice is tired you can also resort to this register since it offers serious muscular relief.
If you don't know the words, or it's the first time you've ever heard the song, humming is an easy fallback. You will have an easier time if you take a few seconds before the vocals come in at any part to hum a note and line up the arrow with where the line comes in. |
