Survival is unlocked 10 or so levels into the campaign, but you'll want to wait until you have all the powerup upgrades before even thinking about attempting this. Once you do, set your upgrades like so, by going into your inventory and adjusting them:

Spark Blast (tier 3)
The worst power-up. If you get one, just shoot it at anything that looks color-scattered. The lower tiers are just less sparks, so you'll have to make this work. Note that Spark Blast will not hit anything in tunnels or in the hole.

Marching Light (tier 3)
I stick with Marching Light because of its ability to rescue you from a dire situation. If you have orbs in the hole, it will take them out. The biggest issue is that you may have been setting up the front of that orb snake for combos, so be careful about when you grab this.

Double Wild Orb (tier 3)
Better than it sounds. It will instantly give you two matches, assuming you didn't hit a pusher or an end of an orb snake. Once you have two, that only leaves one needed for the next power-up. This is one that you can save until you need it by pressing B to continually swap to the back-burner.

Color Blast (tier 2)
Tier 3's Color Wipe is just too inconsistent. The way snakes tend to wrap around each other, combined with Color Blast's AOE, makes it great for knocking out big snakes at once. If the match is large enough, you'll also get a neat effect where a few of the next snake's orbs will be instantly destroyed. Note that color blast DOES work through tunnels, assuming the orb you hit is above ground.

Enchanted Fireflies (tier 2)
My favorite. Tier 3's Wrath of Moon is sneaky, in that it seems to be one of the best power-ups. It's good, but not as good as this. The fireflies allow for more power-ups quickly. They also hang around until they are needed. Brilliant grab - you'll learn to love these.

Frost Ray (tier 3)
The mighty Frost Ray. Devastating to large amounts of orbs, can shoot through holes and tunnels, and destroys anything in its path, no matter how many are in its way. Great for taking out wrapping snakes or days with multiple snakes. Always try to maximize what you're getting out of this. This is another that you can keep on the back-burner by swapping it out with B until you really need it. Great for emergencies, too.

Thank you to XI AlphaMale IX for providing the recommended upgrades and descriptions.

Now, you need to understand that doing well in survival requires a completely different play style from campaign. The star rankings are completely dependent on time, and has nothing to do with how many orbs or snakes you take out. The cutoff for 5 stars is 500 seconds, with each star being 100 seconds. 8 minutes and 20 seconds, if you will. New snakes spawn at a set interval, OR when an orb path is completely empty. Because of this, you'll always want to whittle each snake down to one match, then let it live for as long as possible to postpone the arrival of a new snake. This is absolutely vital to success, as the more snakes you clear, the more colors/locks/rocks are added, and the more difficult the game will become. As a result, Marching Light should generally be avoided early on to keep snakes from being destroyed too soon. As you near 5 stars this becomes impossible to maintain as things get too hectic, but you should definitely restart if you trigger a snake "early" before the second star pops up.

I'm gonna be honest with you here, this is maybe 50/50 luck and skill. You definitely do need to be extremely skilled at the game to have a chance at this, being able to instantly spot combos, effectively use powerups and set up matches, but you also need to get damn lucky. On a lot of levels, especially double orb ones, your success in the last minute and a half will depend entirely on which powerups the game gives you. A lot of fireflies is pretty much a must for the hardest levels, since they allow you to quickly get more combos and clear snakes. No fireflies = absolute death a lot of the time. It sucks, but that's how Sparkle rolls.

Always keep one powerup in your back orb slot, and try to make sure it's a Frost Ray as often as possible. This is the only non-instant powerup that will destroy orbs in the hole, and can thus save you from incredibly bad situations. Double Wild Orb can also be used for this, but is not as reliable.

The levels are overall very similar, so if you can do one, you can probably do them all. The double orb ones are definitely harder, but not by too much. The Far Crossing and Ephemeral Mirage are the hardest ones in my opinion.

Good luck!
