Here is another method that is really quick no matter the race.

Scenario: Beta Centari

Build your city *preferably near water to get faster gold)

You will want to go for a economical victory as it is the quickest (I can win a game in about 5 minutes)
Start by build up your population and build a temple and cathedral first so you can have larger borders for more possible gold harvesting

Don't forget to switch the science to gold in the city map (I only use one city too and this can be easily done on any difficulty too provided you get lucky enough to be isolated~

Just keep doing so building population and building population builders along with any building that makes gold. Once you have all the possible gold buildings set your production to GOLD and just sit and wait turns till you hit 20k then build the building (Switch to full out production/building ability to build the world bank in about 5 turns)

Easy and effective

Edit(7/9/11): Ok so this is a simple fix. Go to the gallery where it shows the busts are. Now yes you may have the busts for all the characters but what you really need to look at is the 4 little squares under the busts to make sure each character has AT LEAST ONE. My significant other had the same issue and she had the bust for Egypt but no little medallion. I hope this will fix that glitch people seem to be running into.
