Massive edit: So my original solution was a little long-winded (read: very) so I have decided to do a much needed update to a lengthy, somewhat outdated solution.
Hoard the Horde was a decent achievement when it first came out but now its pretty much a piece of cake to unlock. The achievement requires you to play through all 50 levels of Horde on any map and on any difficulty. So... -Any map. Go ahead and pick any. Hell, if you want to kill two birds with one stone, go for this achievement on a Snowblind map or Nowhere (part of the Dark Corners collection). -Any difficulty. Do this on Casual. There aren't any added benefits to playing on harder difficulties except for slightly more EXP. -The waves can be done out of order. It doesn't have to be 1-50 in numerical order. It could be 27-48, 49-50, 10-12, 13-26.
Now, in case you're clueless as to how Horde works, its basically a survival mode with multiple waves (50, to be exact). Harder enemies will spawn each wave and reset on the 11th, 21st, 31st, and 41st wave. The 11th, 21st, 31st, 41s, and 46th waves will increase the stats of the enemies (By the 46th wave, all stats will be x2.5, if I remember correctly). There are three things that will make your experience much easier: A good group of people, a good map, and the Boomshield.
Playing with a group of people that a) like Horde mode b) want the achievement or c) both are going to be the best people to play with. Make sure you have a group of five people as well. Things will seem pretty easy at first, but the later waves are going to prove difficult...even with five people. But things are much more manageable with a full crew. Oh, and if everyone has microphones, things will be that much easier. Now, time to pick a map. Out of the three things I listed, this one matters the least since almost any map is a suitable map for Horde mode. What really matters, when it comes to the maps, is finding a suitable location to have everyone group up and control the flow of the enemies. Maps with lots of power weapons are nice, but after a while it will take a long time for the power weapons to kill an enemy. I have played Horde on plenty of maps. I have been through all 50 waves on Gridlock, Day One, River, Nowhere, and Fuel Depot (and countless amount of other waves on different maps). A few maps that I would recommend avoiding would be Stasis and Avalanche, but I am sure plenty of people have found ways to make the "bad" maps work for them.
Alright, now comes the actual gameplay. On whatever map you're team has selected, you're going to want to bunker down on an area that allows you to control the flow of the enemies. Something with only a single entrance/exit is great (think of the comic/movie "300." That's what you're going to want to do for this mode). Also, both the Lancer and Hammerburst work fine. The Lancer makes short work of the Wretches and Sire with the chainsaw, but the Hammerburst ammo can be found quite a bit. And what helps with this? Boomshields. The Boomshield is the greatest tool in Horde mode. With this, you'll be able to change the flow of the enemies, as well as block certain enemies from getting close to you (Wretches, Tickers, Boomers, Maulers, Butchers, Grinders, Bloodmounts will all be blocked). The Drone variants will kick down the shield. Also, a planted shield will not stay planted after every wave. After each wave starts, a player will have to pick up and replant the shield. The more shields available, the better (especially against those fuggin' Bloodmounts). Shields can not be planted on spots covered in blood. Your team should be fully capable of handling the shields.
Miscellaneous tips: -While this is purely cosmetic, playing as a COG with blue armor and using a golden weapons will make you more visible by your teammates. -Power weapons are not an extremely huge deal after the 10th wave. The Longshot and Torque can be helpful for headshots, but avoid stuff like the the Hammer of Dawn. -Grenades are tricky. Planting them is a really bad idea since Wretches and Tickers will kill themselves on purpose. Stick to throwing them. -The Mulcher and Mortar are useful, with the Mulcher taking priority. It holds plenty of ammo and doesn't take up one of your two main weapon slots. -Shoot the Flame Boomer's gas tanks for an easier kill. -If there is a Kantus around, kill it right away. Not only will it received downed drones, but its Ink grenade will ruin your team's day. -When choosing a place for everyone to hide out, be careful. If everyone is too close together, a Boomer will end up killing just about everyone in one shot. -If everyone dies on a wave and has to restart, all of those weapons are lost (and so are the Boomshields) -I found it relatively easier to tackle Horde mode 10 waves at a time. The last 10 rounds were much more bearable because of this. -Always try to leave at least one enemy alive before everyone runs off and gets ammo. Also, before the round ends, make sure there are people nearby the Boomshields, ready to replant them. |
