Story related. There are 7 chapters and each chapter consists of 4 fights for a total of 28 matches. Each chapter you play as a different character.

chapter 1: Lui Kang
chapter 2: Sonya Blade
chapter 3: Jax
chapter 4: Sub Zero
chapter 5: Scorpion
chapter 6: Shang Tsung
chapter 7: Rayden

The last fight in chapter 7 is against Dark Kahn. To beat him I just kept hitting him with Rayden's lighting or superman move.
