Does NOT have to be done in an 'Ranked Online Match' as stated in the description and can absolutely be done in a private 'Player Match' with single rounds. I did it in 'Remixed Mode' after an unsuccessful attempt using 'Classic Mode', (there doesn't appear to be a way to select Akuma in 'Classic Mode', even if you enable the 'Classic Akuma' setting). All wins must be done in 'Remixed Mode' alone and cannot be combined with 'Classic Mode' victories.
Here are the exact settings I used:
Multiplayer > Player Match > Create Match >
Gameplay: Remixed Mode
Timer: Normal
Rounds to Win: 1
Game Speed: 3
Classic Akuma: Disabled
Handicap: Disabled
# Private Slots: 1
# Players: 2
Invite a friend...
EDIT: It has been brought to my attention that there is indeed a way to select Akuma in Classic Mode. Credit to S3M James for the heads-up. Thank you! :)

For all classic modes, selecting Akuma is the same as selecting him in the original version. You must highlight these characters for at least 2 seconds in the following order: Ryu, T. Hawk, Guile, Cammy, and Ryu again. Then, after highlighting Ryu for 2 seconds, press Start and all three punch buttons in quick succession. If you did it correctly, Akuma's portrait will replace Ryu's [on the left].I have personally tested this and can confirm that it is possible to select Akuma. However, I already have the achievement so I am not able confirm whether or not it counts towards the achievement. If anyone uses this method successfully, let me know, and I'll be sure to include the confirmation. Thanks.
