In order to be able to throw sand, you must get trained by the Combat Trainer in Monteriggioni. Talk to him, choose Special Moves, and choose Unarmed Combat, it is free to learn.
To do it, you will just need to hold X when unarmed, and release.
You can use the method in this video, get into a fight, use a Smoke Bomb, and let them have it.
You have to have targeted the enemy in order to throw sand at them.
The Sand Throw is at 00:58.

THIS IS the easiest method and it avoids fighting.
Learn the 'skill'. Get to the point where you get an Assassination mission to kill 10 brutes in 60 seconds. Walk up to the first group (who stand still) and stop about 10 game steps from the group (don't worry timer does not start until conflict does). Select throwing knifes and target a brute, and throw 1 at a brute, quickly change to unarmed and hold 'X'. When they get close enough release the 'X' button to throw sand in there faces. POP you get the achievement. You also get an infinite number of chances, as it restarts when the time runs out.
To kill them in 60sec use smoke bombs and hidden blades.. You should get it first time as you can often double kill them. |

| I found the best and easiest way to get this was to head to the Palazzo Ducale in Venice the place you have to fly to with the flying machine and climb to the roof, their are about ten archers posted up there on the balcony, if you run the lenght of it and get all their attention and stand at the ladder around the corner near the assassin tomb, lots of guards and all bunched together, drop a smoke bomb and wait for it to clear then throw the sand, I got it first try after trying heaps of times elsewhere with no luck, hopes this helps |

| Of course, you have to first go to the trainer outside of a story mission to get this special move, then what I did is went to Tuscany (this can work in any city, since the guards often spawn against the walls, either in an open U to symbolize them talking, or surrounding a door, always guarding spaces that originally contain codex pages and dual treasure chests), then went up to one of these formations, then swapped to my melee and hit the guy closest to me, and IMMEDIATELY started holding the attack button again to charge the attack. Before the guards even started attacking after I had hit one of them, I threw sand in their faces. BLEEP BLOOP |

Go to the trainer, learn the sand though AND the long weapon sweep. You can get both achievements in the same fight. Fast travel to Venice, San Marco.
As soon as you can move you will notice a group of 4 guards in front of you, the leader with a pole. Go unarmed, smack the pole guard in the back of the head, and then do disarm when he retaliates. Run away and through the fobidden zone to collect more guards chasing you.
I found it easier to block and back into a corner, then simply do the pole special move 'sweep' and knock over the 5 for the first achievement, then select melee (this drops the pole) and do the special to do the sand throw.
Then just run away and jump into the water, swim out of the yellow circle - they throw rocks at you in the water whilst still in it.
Done, 2 achievements from the one fight. |

| I found that the best place to do this is in Venice. Once you get about 5-10 guards chasing you throw down a smoke bomb and change to your fist. Once you have done that move away a little bit and wait till the smoke is near clear or clears and make sure your focused on on of the enimies. hold down X and you should grab a handful of sand... the aim at the 4 guards or more and let rip. Thats the way i got this achievement. Hope this helps |

This is a guide done by Achievement hunter just to add to their video it is easier to use a smoke bomb like the video above shows but i thought i would post this video to show how to do the whole thing not just the sand throw and aslo he is in venice most likely the best place to do the Achievement
