This really isn't as hard as it may seem if you've only tried the demo or read the achievement list. This game is actually very lenient when it comes to gold medals and you don't even need to fully combo the very first song to score a gold on it. That means you can totally screw up the hard parts in the later songs and still get the gold.

Just try for perfects as much as you can and remember to launch the "magic power" every time you fill the bar (there will be a noise when that happens); you never need to plan your power-up usage for specific parts of the song and can always just spam it as soon as you have it. Unless you know that you're about to enter a slower part of the song, of course.

When it comes to full combo vs. getting perfects, the latter is always the most important. If you miss a note, don't fret and try to use the miss to catch up on perfecting the next note and so on. For example, if you get 8 perfect notes out of 10 with 2 complete misses, that will be better for your score than getting 10 non-perfect hits with no misses.

Perfect notes also seem to fill up your "magic" meter more quickly and one thing to note about that is that while the game tells you that the meter drops quicker if you fail, it doesn't mean that it'll drop as you're actively using the "magic." What I mean is, failing notes will only drop your meter if you're not actually using it, but it will not drop faster if you ARE using it. So if you know there's a tough part coming up and you have some "magic" in your meter, you might as well launch it for a few extra points instead of having the meter drop because you failed the hard part.

One final thing to note is that this is the kind of game that actually gets easier the further you get! The last song is very hard and I failed miserably at the tougher parts of it, yet I ended up with 3000 more points that needed for gold. The toughest songs in the game are actually in the middle, where it starts to get challenging but the requirements are still strict. You will need to perfect some of those songs.
