I don't know if this is necessary, but before I wrote a book I went to town and took the writing class to improve my writing skill to 1. Then I purchased a computer and from there you have the option of writing any number of different novels. It's actually a great way to make extra income, or eventually just become a full-time author and work from home.

Firstly there is some uncertainty about whether you need to take a lesson in writing before you are able to start writing books. This is not the case.

You can start writing books straight off the bat. All you need is a computer, whether you buy one for your sim or use one in many of the public areas of the town like the library.
Once your sat at a computer, access the writing option and choose your book genre.

I have compiled a list of book generes that are available to write and what requirements (if any) they need to become available:

Article - Requires Journalism career level 3.
Auto Biography - Requires you to have written 3 Biographies.
Biography - Offered through writing opportunities.
Children's - Requires level 3 writing and level 4 painting.
Drama - Requires writing level 3.
Fantasy - Requires you to have written 3 Sci-Fi books.
Fiction - No requirements needed - available at start.
Historical - Writing level 6 and to be in the elderly stage of life.
Humor - Requires writing level 5 or level 3 with 'Good Sense of Humor'
Life Story - Level 10 career opportunity.
Masterpiece - Requires you to have written 25 books.
Mystery - Requires writing level 8.
Non-Fiction - No requirements needed - available at start.
Political Memoir - Requires 'Leader of the Free World' Political Opportunity.
Report - Requires Law Enforcement career level 3.
Romance - Requires writing level 10, or writing level 6 with 'Hopeless Romantic'.
Satire - Requires you to have written 3 Humor books.
Science Fiction - Requires writing level 1, or available at start with 'Computer Whiz'.
Trashy - Requires writing level 2, or available at start with 'Inappropriate'.
Vaudeville - Requires you to have written 2 Drama books, 2 Humor books, 2 Mystery books, 2 Romance books and 2 Sci-Fi books.

While undertaking the Writing skill, you may be asked by friends and or neighbours to write them a style of book. It will appear under 'opportunities' providing that you accept it. If you do accept the opportunity, simply finish the style of book that you have been asked to write and you will complete that opportunity.

When you write books, you will recieve payments for every 20% of the book completed. These tend to be low but when the book is complete you will recieve a slightly larger payment and then payment in royalties.

    (I) Please be aware that payment amounts vary depending on your skill level, number of books both read and written. Another factor to take into consideration is that if the majority of books you have writen are.. for example..Mystery, then you will recieve higher royalties for mystery books then you would if you were to write any other genre.

(II) Royalty checks come once every week, for six weeks after the book has been completed. The money is deposited automatically at noon every sunday.

: On the Sims 3 for PC there is the option via an expansion to make any adult sim with at least writing skill level 1 to become a "self-employed writer" via the City Hall. This career path has it's own rewards and promotions which depend on how much money you sim makes by being an author. This option however is not available on the console versions of the game although some web-sites i have found do stipulate that this is still possible. It is possible that future downloadable content (if any) may include this. :
