This achievement requires 5 million points be earned while playing on normal. It's all about points, and surviving until you get enough points. So...

The more enemies in a vortex, the higher the multiplier. The light blue rats and the gold flying beetles seem to give the most points, and since they chase you, they are fairly easy to lure into a nice big group you can vortex the shit out of.

While I can't be entirely sure, it SEEMS like getting different species into the same vortex increases the multiplier as well.

The multiplier is on a per vortex basis. This means if you have 2 vortexes going, each one calculates it's score separately. This means spamming vortexes all over the place will yield less points than getting all the enemies stuck in one big one.

Obviously, lives take precedent. Don't bother taking risks to get a big multiplier, it's just not worth it. I got this achievement during level 3, and I'm fairly sure the game goes on forever, so you could theoretically get 5 million vortexing enemies one at a time, not that I suggest it.

The reason this is normal difficulty and not easy is that the enemies spawn more often and in much bigger numbers. You also need to defeat more enemies in each room to progress. This allows for bigger multipliers on your vortexes for bigger points, but it's also infuriating when the entire screen is covered with enemies and you need to find a spot for a vortex. Eventually, once I got midway through level 2 or so and beyond, the game is spawning so many enemies that the only way to survive is to keep making vortexes that cover the whole damn map.

Something that I find to be funny is that you can hit the menu button during gameplay, and return to the main menu. From there, you can choose "continue game" which puts you back at the start of whatever room you were at. This is very useful if you die, as this means you can restart the room and do it again, hopefully with less dying. Enemy spawns seem to be different, though, so I wouldn't bother doing this if you miss a big multiplier or something.
