How to start a story:
Simply hit the orbit between the bumpers and the book will open. The book shows you which of the 4 stories you completed. While the book is open you have to hit the oasis or the palace to start a story.
How to choose the story you need:
Battle on the mini playfield:
Hitting the Oasis with an opened book will always lead to this. Note that hitting the oasis without the book being opened will result in the same mini-game, but it won't count towards your story teller progression.
Flying Carpet/Stealing the Map (magnet mini-game):
These two are activated by hitting the palace with an opened book. In front of the palace ramp there's a carpet or sword picture indicating which one will be chosen. It will change everytime you hit a ramp or orbit. Imo that's very annoying, because you'll have to hit orbits for the slingshot to get into the palace, so the outcome is actually pretty unpredictable.
The Cave:
Once you completed the other three stories you just have to hit the cave (centre ramp) and the final multiball will start.
Multiball (3 ball):
Ball save is lit for this multiball, but it will disappear eventually. However, the active time is more than enough to complete this carefree. Your goal is to hit the lit targets until the snake hole opens. The mode is completed when you locked all 3 balls in it. If you fail that's no big deal, just start the story mode again and hit the cave to give it another shot, it's very forgiving.
How to enter the oasis/palace safely:
Note that starting story teller mode activates ball save. When the ball save disappears just keep the ball and wait for story mode to end to try it again within your safety zone. This way you can try for hours, you just have to get comfortable with the orbit shot through the bumpers.
Now to enter the oasis we have to perform a sling shot with the top right flipper. There are two easy methods to do this:
1. Hit the orbit through the bumpers again and the ball will end up right in front of the top right flipper. It will be easy to hit, but the shot has to be very late to reach the oasis, making it quite difficult.
2. Hit the left orbit. The ball will be very fast, so hitting it in the right angle is more or less depending on your luck.
To enter the palace we have to perform a sling shot with the top left flipper. The good thing is, we won't have to look for a way to get the ball there, it will just happen naturally as a result of failed oasis shot attempts. Whenever your ball doesn't quite make it to the oasis from a sling shot with the top right flipper, there is a chance for it to roll in front of your top left flipper. The same happens when your left orbit shots aren't powerful enough. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you should hold the right flipper while performing a sling shot to the palace, as the flipper is blocking the path.

Nekro's guide is spot on. The only thing I will add is some advice regarding the "Steal the map" mission where you have to keep the ball moving with two magnets. This was the only mission I couldn't get my head round, try and try again but I always ended up with the ball running left right over the hole and dropping. It clicked when I started trying to press the left flipper when the ball was at 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock, and the right flipper when the balls at 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. As the ball's going clockwise, provided you only press the flippers at this point in the ball's travel, it'll maintain the circuit.
Good luck, watch the video, catching the ball on the flippers in the guards mini-table is essential, once you have a couple of the front row guards down, wait for the gap to come past again and fire it up the middle-catch-repeat. |
