I did this on the 5th challenge "Summer Skyline" right at the start of the challenge . Just tilt slightly downward to gain speed and move slightly to the right to stay in between buildings. The achievement popped when I was part way into the thermal.

Keep in mind that if you are going downward through a thermal that you will continue to gain speed and not altitude.
