Wait for the runner to be slightly off centre with your thrower and throw as hard as possible as straight as you can.

Motion Sports seems to take into account how plant your feet, twist your body and the follow through arc of your arm (none of this is relayed to you in the game or manual).

Plant the opposite foot to your throwing arm firmly and straight. Lean back and take your arm with you, and 'throw' with your full body being sure to keep your arm very straight in terms of it's direction (not physically without bending) on the follow through.
