Once you unlock the ability to upgrade your equipment (early in the game), go in your inventory and press Y on any piece of equipment (weapon, armor, hat, gloves, pants...) and if you have the requested resources (mostly wood and iron at the beginning), press A on the left arrow and confirm your choice.

You'll have to do this a lot throughout the game to upgrade your equipment and add special perks, but this achievement can be unlocked very early.
