Kill enemies with bullet based weapons. Assault rifles are your best bet because they are going to have the most ammo. Headshots are worth a bit more.

A quick way to get Firearms experience is shooting gas tanks. For whatever reason, the explosions caused by this give you Firearms rather than Explosive.

This is especially nice during hit-squad rushes.
