How to unlock the Chaos Master achievement

There are 6 Chaos Emeralds to collect in total in Sonic The Hedgehog 1. They can only be obtained in the Special Stages.

To enter a Special Stage, you must first collect a total of 50+ Rings, then successfully complete the level with the required amount of rings. If you have done this you will see a Giant Ring at the end of the level. Once you have past the Finish Sign, you need to quickly jump inside the Ring, before Sonic runs off the screen and then you will then enter in the Special Stage.

A Special Stage is when Sonic is in a permanent spinball, and you must guide him around the arena, passing obstacles and objects to successfully find the Chaos Emerald. Once you have collected a Chaos Emerald, the next time you go into a Special Stage it will change to a different arena. If you fail to collect a Chaos Emerald however, you will have to retry again by collecting another 50+ Rings and enterting another Giant Ring. Collect all 6 Chaos Emeralds and you will unlock the achievement.

Note: It is recommended that you save your progress each time you go into a Special Stage. The reason is because if you fail, you can attempt to get the achievement again, without grabbing another 50+ Rings and entering a different Giant Ring.

Note: You can only enter Giant Rings on Act 1 or Act 2 in the Zones available in the game, for instance Green Hill Zone Act 1 or Starlight Zone Act 2. You cannot enter a Giant Ring on Act 3's, because they are all boss levels.

Note: The Giant Ring will not appear once you have successfully collected all 6 Chaos Emeralds. Collecting all 6 Chaos Emeralds will reveal the True Ending, once you have defeated the Final Boss and completed the game.

SiRFaPaLoT420I can confirm that there is no emerald on scrap brain zone 1. I went in thinking 6 levels?! There must be 1 emerald is each zone! Now I have to replay the game because I botched my save files.

This solution exists because the others were misleading.

You must have at least 50 rings at the end of an Act, and jump into the giant ring past the end gate, in order to go to a Special Stage. It is recommended that you save more than you normally do when going for this achievement, because the Special Stages are fairly difficult if you don't. When in a Special Stage, do NOT go for the goal blocks; you will leave the stage with nothing.

This is where it was misleading elsewhere. You CANNOT get ANY Chaos Emeralds within ANY of the Acts in Scrap Brain Zone (sixth and final Zone). You also cannot get a Chaos Emerald in any Act 3 stage, because the end is not a goalpost, but a fight against Eggman.

This means you can get Chaos Emeralds in the following Acts:
    Green Hill Zone 1
    Green Hill Zone 2
    Marble Zone 1
    Marble Zone 2
    Spring Yard Zone 1
    Spring Yard Zone 2
    Labyrinth Zone 1
    Labyrinth Zone 2
    Star Light Zone 1
    Star Light Zone 2

You CAN and MUST get at least two Chaos Emeralds within the same Zone. It is therefore possible to get this achievement at the end of Spring Yard Zone Act 2, since that will be your sixth opportunity to get a Chaos Emerald. I recommend this strategy so you don't have to worry about it in the later levels. I thought you could only get one Chaos Emerald per Zone and found out you couldn't get one in Scrap Brain Zone 1.
