A Chaos Emerald can be collected at the end of a bonus stage, and you are able to access a bonus stage at the end of Act 1 or 2 of any of the worlds. To do this, make sure you have at least 50 rings before you approach the goal screen. To make this easier, use the save feature often (save at the beginning of the act, switch to a new save slot, and use that one as you progress; the first save will be there if you screw up royally). If you have the 50 required rings (or more), there will be a giant ring just past the goal you can jump into. Make sure you do this soon after you cross the goal sign, as Sonic will automatically run off after a bit.

Once you're in the stage, save in a new slot. Sonic will be in an eternal jump / spin the entire time, though you are allowed to jump when he's touching a wall. Basically, the entire stage spins, and you'll have to navigate through to the Chaos Emerald. Typically, you should follow the path of rings, which will usually lead you to the Chaos Emerald's general area.

What you'll encounter:

- Goal tiles (despite the name, these tiles will cause you to exit the bonus)
- Star bumpers (will send Sonic flying)
- R tiles (will reverse the spin of the stage)
- Up / Down tiles (toggles the spin speed between fast or slow; obviously, it's harder to control Sonic when the stage is spinning fast)
- Rings (collect them for lives and continues)

You'll usually know when you're near an emerald when you pass through some translucent panels that become solid right after. This is usually a good time to save as well.

The Chaos Emeralds are surrounded by diamonds that you must break by touching them. Different diamonds take longer to break than others, depending on their color. The green ones take the longest, and the purple ones will disappear in one touch. The bonus stage will end when you collect the Chaos Emerald.
