There are three possible ways for you to start this quest; getting arrested, talking to Armand Christophe, or reading the wanted poster for the Gray Fox. I think the easiest way is by reading the wanted poster so that's the one I'm writing this about.

First off, head to the Imperial City where the posters are scattered about on the walls. After you've read the poster, find a beggar somewhere around the city (they can be found wandering in almost any part during the day and fall asleep in their beds in the street at night). Play the persuasion game with the beggar, (or simply bribe them) to get their disposition above 70. After it gets this high, you can speak with them about the Gray Fox to which they will answer "Are you looking for him?" to which you respond "Yes, I want to work with him". The beggar will then tell you to travel to the Garden of Dareloth which is located in the Waterfront district of the city, behind the Abandoned Shack (your marker should tell you where to go). Stand in the garden and wait until midnight (pressing the wait button will make this go by much faster ;) ).

Halfway done, now for the fun part. At midnight, you should see 3 people walking towards you; an Argonian named Amusei and a wood elf named Methredel (the thieves who you are competing against), and Armand Christophe, the overseer of this little competition. Speak to Armand and he will give the 3 of you the task to steal and return to him the diary of Amantius Allectus. One simple rule for this quest, don't kill Amantius, Methredel, or Amusei (after all you're theives not murderers :) ).

To start off, speak to a beggar again about the location of Allectus's house. Fast travel to the Temple district and follow the marker to the house where you should find the diary. Problem is, Methredel has almost definitly already stolen the diary in which case now you have to steal it off of her. 2 ways to do this, if your sneak skill is pretty good, you can try and pickpocket her and take the diary off of her that way. Otherwise, you can sneak into her house while she is sleeping where you will find a locked chest on the ground with the diary in it (you will need to pick both locks, the door to her house and her chest). After you have the diary in your possesion, return to the Garden of Dareloth at midnight and present the diary to Armand. Achievement unlocked.
