This is the first piece of DLC for A World of Keflings and hopefully not the last. I did enjoy it a lot, so I've decided to review it. If leaving negative feedback, please give a reason so that I can improve on this in future reviews.
Content
This DLC is a completely separate storyline from the main game. You can only get to the DLC by starting a new game from the main menu – your previous game saves are not relevant at all. “It Came From Outer Space” sees aliens crash land in the Kefling kingdom, and you have to help them to rebuild their spaceship. Of course, it isn’t just as simple as repairing the damage, as you need various workshops and specialised workers before you can stop the smoke from billowing out of the wreckage. Science fiction fans will want to keep an eye open for the numerous references to films, music and literature that make the storyline an extremely enjoyable experience.
Two of the builder brothers accompany you to the new kingdom, but the rest of the cast are completely new. The main characters come with their own unique and amusing personalities, and they use the same mangled English to communicate with you splendiferously. Even though many are new characters, I wouldn’t recommend that you play this DLC until after you have completed the main storyline, just so you understand exactly who your first companions are.
Your alien workers will gather sand and leaves for you, but you will need super robot workers to gather the more valuable resources of crystal and junk. Although three of the initial resources are the same as before, the workshops turn them into completely new and fitting materials for the map.
Ninjabee has addressed issues from the main game concerning resources, but may have been a little over-eager. In the Keflarabian map in the main game, leaves and sand resources often didn’t replenish quickly enough, meaning that your workers had to travel to the far flung corners of the map to gather the resources that you needed. This DLC has the opposite problem. I found that some of the trees and crystals grew back so quickly that I’d have workers who found themselves cut-off and unable to get back to the workshop. This issue also meant that building space was often at a shortage. I found myself cramming many of the first buildings together into a tight space, as I couldn’t get into some areas of the map and I couldn’t clear more space quickly enough.
A couple of the blueprints did seem a little unnecessary, unfortunately. For instance, there is no need to build a second workshop, and I immediately destroyed it and reused the parts once the blueprint had been ticked off. The storyline takes approximately two hours to complete if you take your time and don’t rush through it. Bearing in mind that the storyline of the main game took approximately eight hours to complete if you explored everywhere and built every blueprint, it weighs in at a 25% expansion to the game – slightly less than the 30% expansion advertised by NinjaBee.
Achievements and Avatar Awards
First off, there aren’t any new avatar awards, so no alien kefling pet for you. The achievements themselves are easy to gain, and being mostly story related, can be gained after a single playthrough. I got all three achievements without realising that I was performing the requirements.
Personally I would have preferred to have had an achievement that required gameplay outside of the main storyline, i.e. for using the workshop to create more unique decorative pieces. As the map stands, there are enough decorative pieces to be able to build all of the buildings and still have some spare.
Overall Verdict
The storyline is amusing and typically well-written Kefling fare. Although there are a couple of recurring characters and the original resources are mostly recycled, the majority of the content is completely new. The achievements are easy to gain, but the DLC does have issues. The map is too cramped and resources replenish far too quickly. However, I would still recommend the DLC for Kefling fans who will enjoy this DLC as much as they enjoyed the main game. Non-fans may want to wait a while though until the DLC comes down from its current 320 MSP price point.
