Despite the criticism this piece of downloadable content has received for being day one, "From Ashes" is a much better improvement of Mass Effect 2's squadmate downloadable content.

Given the nature of how squadmates are interacted with in Mass Effect 3 Javik, the Prothean is given much better treatment than Zaeed and Kasumi. Instead of the bulk of dialogue coming from the main mission of the content, Javik is treated as a squadmate had he been on disc. He has new lines after every notable mission and on occasion interacts with other members of the Normandy.

Javik himself is quite the portrayal of a race we seemingly knew nothing about aside from their destruction. Having been in stasis for 50,000 years Javik has a very interesting perspective on several things and he often shows this perspective with a sharp tongue.

In combat Javik is a biotic and while only two of his four powers are new moves in the series he is still a great addition. He also comes with a new weapon that can deal serious damage.

Unlike Zaeed and Kasumi, the sole mission added to the game can be completed in 20 minutes on the lower difficulties. Normally this is a bad thing but Javik is such a character that it ends up being a balanced package.

The reality is you are paying for a squad member and 50 achievement points. The more you use Javik the more you get out of this package.

From Ashes allows Shepard to acquire a unique follower for the mission – a Prothean named Javik. Recruiting him requires returning to Eden Prime, the colony where you encountered the beacon in the first Mass Effect.

I'll ignore the fact that this DLC came out on the same day ME3 itself was released, because this has already been discussed and argued over hundreds of times already. However, the price is a bit steep for what you're getting. It's a very short mission which you can probably complete in about 10 - 15 minutes. Ideally, the price should have been 560 points, which is the same price as "Kasumi - The Stolen Memory" DLC in ME2. Add the fact that the mission is shorter and you're paying more for less. Aside from the price, the mission itself is quite interesting and fun to play through, and Javik does have some amusing dialogue throughout the game. He also has better dialogue than the ME2 DLC squad mates. Plus, in addition to giving you an actual Prothean to fight alongside you against the Reapers, From Ashes also gives you more details about Prothean civilization, which is likely to be completely different to how you imagined it.

As for the achievements, getting the Prothean Expert is no problem since all that involves is completing the mission on any difficulty. You might want to have a guide ready for the Freedom Fighter achievement though, since it can be missed.

So the DLC is all right, I've seen better for the same price, but then again, I've seen worse. It all just depends on how much money you're willing to spend on a squad mate, really.

I would have liked to see more extra gameplay come out of this dlc for the 800 point price drop. The one mission to obtain him didnt make me feel like my money was well spent. What made it a little better in my mind was all the conversations and backstory that he added. I felt like the added dialogue and character interaction almost made up for the lack of extra gameplay. The rifle is amazing when put into the hands of your squadmates. It's powerful and the beam it fires lets you know what enemies your AI squadmates are covering. I wanted more for my 800 points but it is still a great addition to the game.
