Big Thrills is the second DLC for million-selling XBLA game Trials HD, adding forty brand new levels of varying difficulty and six tournaments to the addictive and hair-pullingly frustrating game. Ten of the tracks were contest winning designs created by the fans, giving a wider exposure to some of the best the community has to offer.

At a mere 400 MSP, it’s quite a bargain. Ranging through all five difficulties, the forty levels are far from repetitive, offering a wide array of concepts and designs – just like the main game, no two levels are the same. Sure, they might look similar, set inside the same warehouse or location, but they all play out uniquely. Sure, just like every other track in the game, there are jumps, loops, explosive hazards and all of that, but none of them are identical, which means they’re all equally fun, and keeps you ploughing through them all to see what else the game can throw in your way.

The Big Thrills tracks host some of the most interesting designs yet. Levels like “Laser Tag,” with its timed explosives, revolving proximity mines and hazardous lasers, are just ingeniously well designed, adding even more variation (not to mention tension!) to an already successful level format. Or the innovative jumps of “Flight School,” using the fire-powered pickups to create huge leaps of faith, with numerous routes to the exit offering a fresh playstyle.

The aesthetics of the levels also offer a lot of variation, with a lot of the tracks rivalling even the most interesting we’ve seen so far in the game. Pretty much every track in this DLC feels just as fresh as the original ones did the first time you played the game – and that’s a really compliment for a game that is essentially a one-trick pony.

Again, just like the main game, at the high end of the scale, some of the tracks are infuriatingly hard. With plenty of both Hard and Extreme tracks included in the Big Thrills pack, it definitely offers more of a challenge than the previous Big Pack. I’d go as far as saying that pretty much all of the Hard ones are tougher than the Hard tracks that shipped with the game – and that’s really saying something!

The DLC doesn’t add any new Skill Games, which is a real shame, especially when you consider that the previous DLC added thirty-five tracks and twelve skills games with the same price tag. But when you consider how many games charge extortionate amounts for so much less content, maybe I’m just being greedy in wanting more!

All in all, despite all the tracks available already, the forty in this new DLC pack are still fresh, original and interesting and are an absolute blast to play through. They’re all flawless in their design and execution, and for that low price of 400 MSP, the DLC is totally worth the purchase.
