Dragon Ball Z: Budokai
Once the main menu loads up, go to the Options and adjust the difficulty settings. Feel free to lower the Game Difficulty to Very Easy, modify the COM Level to Very Weak, change Duel Time to 30 (seconds) and enable the Quick Start if you want. The Game Difficulty will make things easier in Story mode, while the Duel Time will help a bit for the tournaments later.
When it's done, start Story mode. In this game mode you will play a fixed pattern of fights until you clear the three sagas available. Remember that you can skip the cutscenes by pressing Start.
If you want, feel free to skip this section of the walkthrough -- there isn't anything important that you *must* read, and this section is more for record's sake and for assistance in case some fights give you problems, maybe because you aren't used to the gameplay yet. If you get how things work, fight your way through the three sagas, then after defeating Cell with Teen Gohan select the optional episodes manually to complete everything related to Story mode.
When fighting, DO NOT rush towards your opponent. Press the correct buttons of a combo, do not button-mash hoping that something good will come. For all the combos that end with a special attack (Kamehameha, Zanku Fist, ...) remember that you will see a glowing capsule in the bottom-left corner of the screen in the exact moment when you need to press the B button of the combo. For example, if the combo is XXXXB (in-game it reads PPPPE), you will see a capsule glowing in the bottom-left corner of the screen just after pressing XXXX. Try to notice the glowing capsules in the bottom-left corner, because it's important to time your moves to land the combo properly: anticipate B or wait too much, and the combo will fail. Although it may sound useless (the combos aren't all that hard), the visual clue of a glowing capsule helps a lot to time the buttons right.
Alternatively, the XXYYY combo is usually good to deal Ki-free damage.
# 1 - Mysterious Alien Attack!!
In this episode you play Goku vs Raditz. Both the combos available are good to use. You will receive the Zanku Fist skill for Goku after the fight. Once it's over, there will be a minigame where you have to spin LS_Clockwise to move Raditz and Goku to the right and LS_Counterclockwise to move them left. Adjust their position so you remain within the blue zone at the center of the screen for as long as the game requires to clear the episode. After succeeding you will unlock Raditz as playable character, as well as this achievement:

# 4 - Goku's Quiet Fury
Here you can transform and use the Kaioken (called King Kai Fist) to boost your attack and defeat Nappa as Goku. As explained in the General hints and tips, the RB button equals to pressing X+Y+A, so if you want to transform just press RB. Don't bother too much with the transformation either: you can win simply by spamming the same attacks used in the previous fight. You will unlock Nappa as playable character after the fight.
# 5 - Super Duel!
This is the fight Goku vs Vegeta. The new "Continuous Kamehameha" attack is quite good: D-Pad_Forward+X, then XXXB. After the fight you will receive the King Kai Fist x 2 skill (transformation).
# 6 - Show Gohan's True Power!
Kid Gohan vs Vegeta here; the XXYYB attack is very good, but remember that it consumes 2 Ki instead of 1. You unlock Vegeta as playable character at the end of the fight.
At the end of this fight the Saiyan Saga ends, and the game asks if you want to return to the Main Menu. Pick "No" to continue (if you pick "Yes" just select again Story mode from the main menu to continue).
# 1 - Let's go to Namek!
The first part of this saga is a training session, i.e. your goal is not to defeat the opponent but to perform certain actions. There will be three fights, and the damage you take is carried over to the next fights (your health gauge doesn't recover), so be careful.
The first fight requires you to deflect 15x Ki Blasts (the small energy waves that you can shoot with B). The CPU will literally spam Ki Blasts, so just keep some distance and tap A to deflect them when they reach you. You will receive the King Kai Fist x 5 transformation.
Next you'll need to activate Burst Mode five times. Burst Mode is a struggling duel which triggers when you and your opponent both press RB in melee range. A struggle animation will trigger, and you can win it by spinning LS/RS_Clockwise. The CPU will come in melee range near you to attack with RB; just press RB in your turn to trigger the struggle (the correct moment to press RB is just when you see Vegeta's arm moving, ready to charge the punch). You will receive King Kai Fist x 10.
The last training is a real fight -- defeat your opponent, practicing with the Dragonthrow a bit maybe (A+X at once to grab the enemy). The Continuous Kamehameha is Ki-expensive (2 Ki), but also very efficient, as it was earlier. After the fight you will receive the Senzu Bean item and unlock:

# 3 - Goku's Arrival!
Goku vs Recoome. Recoome will parry a lot, and you may end up wasting Ki on parried special attacks. Instead of doing so, try to invest the Ki for a transformation (go King Kai Fist x 10), then spam the XXYYY combo over and over. After the fight you will unlock Recoome.
A second fight against Captain Ginyu will trigger afterwards. Captain Ginyu is more offensive than the opponents encountered so far, so be ready to take more damage than usual. Stick with some simple and Ki-free combos. The YYYY series of kicks is rather good to keep the enemy down. After the fight you will unlock the Super Dragon Fist attack.
A third battle will trigger now, Captain Ginyu vs Goku. You can land a nice YYYY combo to launch the enemy in the air, followed by some random punches (XXXX) to add extra damage while the enemy is falling to the ground. After the fight you will unlock Ginyu as playable character, and also this achievement:

# 6 - Goku's Revival!
Goku vs Frieza -- spam the Continuous Kamehameha attack to win. You will receive the Spirit Bomb attack for Goku.
# 7 - The Legendary Super Saiyan
Goku vs Frieza again, but this time you have the Super Saiyan transformation available (5 Ki gauges necessary). You start the fight as Super Saiyan. Remember that if your Ki goes down and you start getting hit, the transformation will wear off very quickly. If that happens, screw the SSJ form and keep fighting with normal-Goku's regular attacks. If you can stay SSJ, use the Super Dragon Fist (D-Pad_Forward+Y, then YYB) to deal a lot of damage at the price of 3 Ki. If you return normal, use the Spirit Bomb attack (3 Ki) for massive damage. At the end of the fight you will unlock the Super Saiyan transformation for Goku and also this achievement:

# 8 - A Quiet But Fierce Battle
Yet another fight Goku SSJ vs Frieza; this time you will unlock Frieza as playable character after the fight.
This ends the Frieza Saga, so the game asks again if you want to return to the Main Menu. Continue to the Androids Saga...
# 1 - A New Threat
Goku vs #19. At this point it starts to become important to defend and guard too. A good pattern for an easy victory is to guard and wait for the enemy's attack; then immediately counter with Zanku Fist when his guard is open. At the end of the fight you will receive the important Viral Heart Disease equipment capsule, which will become important for easy wins in the tournaments later. You will also unlock:

# 3 - A Wicked Omen
Piccolo vs Cell. Piccolo has two transformations available, but you can stick with the simple XXYB combo for an easy win. Fierce Ranma is also a good attack to use, but consumes 3 Ki and is too risky. Again, guard & counterattack will work much better than a blind assault; since the XXYB combo will kick the enemy away, you can refill your Ki while waiting for him to come at you, and then be ready with A held down to guard his attack before countering with another combo. At the end of the fight you will unlock the Fuse With Kami transformation for Piccolo, as well as this achievement:

# 4 - Sneaky Cell
Piccolo vs #17. Without XXYB available again, you may want to rely on simple YYYY combo, or maybe the Hellzone Grenade attack for massive damage (3 Ki required). As usual at this point, make sure to guard and counter, don't just attack. After the fight you will unlock #17 as playable character.
# 7 - Cell's Game Begins
Goku vs Cell. The Warp Kamehameha (XXYYB) is very effective -- spam a couple of these attacks for an easy victory. After the fight you will unlock the Warp Kamehameha attack.
# 8 - A Warrior Beyond Goku
Teen Gohan vs Cell. High-Speed Hammer (XXYYB) is the equivalent of Warp Kamehameha for Teen Gohan, but Cell seems to guard a bit too much to rely on this attack. Instant Killquick is more reliable. You will unlock Teen Gohan as playable character after the fight.
# 9 - Gohan Explodes!!
Teen Gohan (this time as SSJ2) vs Cell Jrs. x 7, one after another. Instant Killquick is once again a good combo to win with ease. Alternatively, replace the final B button of the Instant Killquick combo with another X (punch) to make a Ki-free combo (deals less damage than Instant Killquick, but is good enough and faster). After the fight you will unlock the Super Saiyan 2 transformation for Teen Gohan.
The final fight against Cell will trigger after the fight against the Cell Jrs.; Instant Killquick will once again work good. Make sure to guard and counter, this fight is particularly annoying if you play too offensive. After the fight you will receive the Mixed Blood Power capsule and unlock:

# 10 - The Final Battle!!
Teen Gohan SSJ2 vs Cell. Try to start with the Super Kamehameha, then stick with Instant Killquick. After the fight you will unlock Cell as playable character.
The Cell saga will end and the credits will roll. Skip them with Start if you want, then you'll be back at the main menu. At this point you can choose Story mode again and notice how there is a chapter selection menu, with new episodes to play and more to unlock. Let's mop it up with order.
# 2 - A Mutually Deadly Foe
Piccolo vs Raditz; XXYB is effective (no need to play defensive here, go full assault). You will receive the Instant Killquick attack for Piccolo at the end of the fight.
A minigame will trigger after the fight: spin LS/RS_Clockwise to fill 3 Ki gauges within the time limit and clear this episode. You will also unlock the Special Beam Cannon attack and this achievement:
Unlocked by 4,250 tracked gamers (65% - TA Ratio = 1.24)
# 3 - Saiyan Attack!!
Piccolo vs Saibaman x 6. Again, stick with XXYB and keep attacking. You will receive the Demon Roundhouse attack (throw move) for Piccolo.
Next you will fight Nappa; he guards a lot, and your best bet is waiting his attack to counter with a XXXXB attack. You will unlock the Fierce Ranma attack for Piccolo, as well as this achievement:
Unlocked by 4,169 tracked gamers (64% - TA Ratio = 1.25)
You'll be back at the chapter selection screen, and the last episode is now available. Select it to complete the Saiyan Saga.
# 7 - Vegeta, Saiyan Prince
You will fight as Vegeta against three enemies in a row (Goku, Krillin, Kid Gohan), and your health gauge will not be recovered between the fights. Final Bash is a great attack to use as counter; be defensive with Goku, go full assault against Krillin and Kid Gohan. Vegeta's YYYY combo is also very effective. At the end of the third fight you will receive the Galick Cannon attack for Vegeta, and you will witness a quite funny scene (if you get the reference). You will also unlock:

# 2 - Vegeta's Attack!
Vegeta vs Zarbon; play offensive with the usual Final Bash, one after another. You will unlock Zarbon as playable character.
Next you will fight Recoome; be more defensive, and use the YYYY combo to counter. After this fight you will unlock Dodoria as playable character, and also this achievement:
Unlocked by 4,032 tracked gamers (62% - TA Ratio = 1.28)
# 4 - The Road to Super Saiyan
Vegeta vs Frieza. The second and third Galick Gun combos are good to counter (the third one seems more reliable); YYYY is a good alternative. At the end of the fight you will unlock the Final Bash attack for Vegeta.
# 5 - Frieza? Or Vegeta?
Vegeta vs Frieza again; same as earlier, but you'll probably need to defend more. After the fight you will receive the Saiyan Blood capsule and then you'll be back at the episode selection screen. Pick the last episode left.
# 9 - Raging Frieza
Frieza vs Kid Gohan. You can use pretty much whatever attack you prefer (Frieza's Nightmare works fair enough), but be ready to guard a lot since the little boy is mad at you. After the fight you will unlock the Death Beam attack for Frieza.
Next you will fight Piccolo; the third Death Beam combo is good. No need to play defensive here. You will receive the Evil Dance attack for Frieza.
At last you will fight Vegeta; a simple XXXXB combo works fine without having to worry about defending. You will receive the Final Form transformation for Frieza.
# 10 - The True Ruler
Frieza vs Goku; you should know how to proceed at this point. At the end of the fight you will receive the 100% Final Form transformation for Frieza. You will also unlock:

# 2 - Super Saiyan Vegeta
Vegeta vs #19; anything works fine, you can also just spam YYYY. You will unlock #19 as playable character.
Then you will fight Vegeta vs #18; you can land the Big Bang Attack quite easily, and it's a quick way to win this fight. You will unlock #18 as playable character.
# 5 - Vegeta's Confidence!
Vegeta vs Cell. You can rely on XXYYY here. You will unlock the Super Vegeta transformation.
# 6 - Perfect Form Cell Complete!!
Vegeta vs Cell; XXYYB (Final Flash) is very powerful and cheap, so go with it. After the fight you will unlock Trunks as playable character, and you'll be back at the chapter selection screen.
# 11 - Aim For Perfect Form!
Cell vs #16; win with simple XXXXB combos. You will unlock #16 as playable character after the fight, thus unlocking also:
Unlocked by 4,076 tracked gamers (62% - TA Ratio = 1.27)
There is still a fight Cell vs Krillin in this episode (use YYYY combos); after winning you will receive the Second Form transformation for Cell.
# 12 - A Cold-Blooded Assassin
Cell (sorta) vs Yamcha; XXYYY works great. You will unlock Yamcha as playable character after the fight, and also this achievement:

Edit Skills and World Match (Tournaments)
Now that you've finished your business with Story mode you can dedicate yourself to the World Match tournaments. The World Tournament has three difficulty settings: Novice, Adept, Advanced. By default, only Novice is available; you'll need to purchase the system Silver Capsules in order to unlock the Adept and Advaced difficulty.
- World Match (Adept) costs 4,000 Zenie, and will become available for sale as the "Recommended" skill in the Skill Shop only if you have unlocked at least 16 characters. It will automatically be put for sale, so whether it's there or not is not random. It will look like this.
- World Match (Advanced) costs 4,000 Zenie, and will become available for sale after winning the World Match on lower difficulties. You must have unlocked 32 characters as well to play this tournament.
The difficulty of World Matches does not influence the CPU level, but only the amount of fights to win: 3 fights for Novice, 4 matches for Adepts, 5 for Advanced. It's possible to win the matches by two different conditions: by Ring-Out and by KO. Ring-Out is fast and easy, and you can choose a character like Vegeta to perform simple YYYY combos to throw the enemies off the ring very easily (some opponents like Recoome and Nappa are more resilient, but most of the rest can be Ring-Out'ed without too much effort).
There is also an alternative strategy used to grind the World Match tournaments, and it was the most used strategy to gain Zenie when this game originally came out. The strategy is based on three elements: the duel time must be set to something low in the game Options (30 seconds is the minimum); you must equip the Viral Heart Disease support capsule; you must buy and equip the Vaccine capsule. Viral Heart Disease will periodically drain the life of both the characters; Vaccine nullifies this for your character, meaning that only the opponent will be affected by Viral Hearth Disease. It's clear that if you just guard all the time you will end up with more health than your opponent (he may land some hits, but the damage you take is ridiculous compared to the life he loses with Viral Heart Disease), so you will win automatically when the time is out.
The problem with this strategy is that you need to get the Vaccine capsule first from the Skill Shop, so you're not ready to go by default. Vaccine (like any other generic capsule) is put for sale randomly. In the skill shop you can decide which type of capsule to purchase (Red, Blue, Green), but you don't know which capsule exactly you've purchased (this kinda sucks). Every time you enter the shop there will be also a "Recommended" article; it can be any capsule, including some special Silver Capsules, and you can check exactly which capsule it is. This means that you can go in and out the shop and keep trying until you finally get the Vaccine as "Recommended" article.
A variant of the previous strategy is this: equip Viral Heart Disease and Senzu Bean (you received both in Story mode), and set the Duel Time to 45 seconds instead of 30. At this point you can rely on Senzu Beam to completely replenish your health before the time is out by getting killed within the time limit (Senzu Bean refills your health only if you reach 0 health first). Of course you will not be guarding, but you'd rather try to get hit by your enemy so that Senzu Bean can be used. This strategy could work with a time limit of 30 seconds too, but 30 seconds are usually a strict time to get killed. With 45 seconds you should have plenty of time to get killed.
Personally, I suggest using Vegeta with Viral Heart Disease, Senzu Bean, 45 seconds Duel Time: spam the YYYY attack to attempt a Ring-Out; if the enemy is not particularly strong you will win simply by Ring-Out; if it's a tougher opponent (Recoome, Nappa, Frieza), get killed and revived by the Senzu Beam and let the time-out win for you. While waiting for the time-out, don't just guard: spam YYYY attacks, and you may end up killing the enemy before he kills you.
Keep in mind that Viral Heart Disease can't kill you directly, because its effect will stop when you have only half life bar left. Also remember that if you draw a match, both you and your opponent will lose.
After winning the Novice tournament you will get 10,000 Zenie and unlock:

After winning the Adept tournament you will get 30,000 Zenie, unlock Mr. Satan as playable character, the World Match (Advanced) and Legend of Mr. Satan capsules will be put for sale, and you will also unlock:
Unlocked by 3,308 tracked gamers (50% - TA Ratio = 1.41)
Purchase also the Leged of Mr. Satan for 4,000 Zenie (it's another Silver Capsule that will appear, after beating the Adept tournament, among the "Recommended" at Mr. Popo's) to unlock:
Unlocked by 3,280 tracked gamers (50% - TA Ratio = 1.41)
Legend of Mr. Satan is a new game mode, a sort of survival where you play as Mr.Satan. It's not related to achievements, so you can ignore it altogether.
After winning the Advanced tournament you will get 50,000 Zenie, unlock Great Saiyaman as playable character and therefore these two achievements:

At this point you should have the most boring 395 G of this collection. It's time to play Budokai 3!
