Hi guys, I'm hoping that in this community of TAers, there will some some among us with a passion for Science Fiction (SciFi) films. So, here's my questions for the forum.
1. What are your favorite Science Fiction films? do a top 5, top 10, whatever you like! 2. Looking at what other people have listed as their favorites, can you think of any SciFi films which missed out on other people's lists but are notable mentions of 'diamond in the rough' SciFi films?
To define SciFi I think it should either include some type of extraterrestrial life or discovery, or have taken place in the future at the time of producing the film.
To start us off, I will answer #1, then give an answer for #2. My top 5 SciFi films in order: 1. Aliens (1986) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/ 2. Serenity (2005) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/ 3. Terminator 2 - Judgement Day (1991) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103064/ 4. Predator (1987) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093773/ 5. The Matrix (1999) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/
To give examples of notable films which you mightn't have seen (as in I think they're not widely viewed) but are excellent SciFi films, Virtuosity - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114857/ Event Horizon - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119081/ Moon - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/
Anyway, your opinion is valid unless you put Aliens (1986) anywhere other than number one. Hope to hear of your favorites, and maybe even get recommended a few new ones to watch! |

I'll take the list a little bit more seriously this time.
1. Fifth Element 2. Pitch Black 3. Aliens 4. 2001: A Space Odyssey 5. Matrix
The six Star Wars films are definitely worth watching if you are one of the three people on the planet who hasn't seen them yet.
Three films I really like altough I woulnd't recommend them because they are really old and very cheesey are: Soylent Green Logan's Run Flash Gordon
Pitch Black has a sequel which is also excellent called The Chronicles of Riddick
Three great doomsday films, some featuring aliens and some not are: Sunshine Armageddon Independance Day
T2o absolute classics that I adore but didn't put on my list because there is little action in it (which is what I feel most people want from and Sci-fi) are: AI Twelve Monkeys
And then you've always got those mindless films that you can enjoy without really paying attention which include: I Robot Starship Troopers Star Trek Terminator 1, 2, 3 & 4
Two films that I wasn't sure if you'd class them as Sci-fi's but are cool nonetheless are: Vanilla Sky Waterworld |

I apologize for the blast here, but as a huge fan of sci-fi (well movies in general) I just couldn't limit myself to 5! Also, to keep things fresh I will not re-post movies others have already mentioned.
The Mist - (my favorite Stephen King movie of all time) eXistenZ - (great Matrix-type movie, but the "other" world is a video game!!!) The Black Hole - (old-but-great sci-fi classic) City of Ember - (post-apocalyptic film about a couple kids escaping from an underground shelter) Heavy Metal and/or Heavy Metal 2000 - (adult animated sci-fi adventures with GREAT music) A Clockwork Orange - (very deep and dark Stanley Kubrick movie about the rehabilitation of a young psychopath convicted of murder) Equilibrium - (an exciting and modern telling of the classic Fahrenheit 451 story) Dark City - (kind of trippy movie about aliens who switch the things that make us unique from person to person to try to find what makes us human) Children of Men - (the thrilling adventure of man escorting a pregnant woman to a safe zone in a world where women can no longer give birth) The Invasion - (great modern telling of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers story) Cube - (cult classic about a group of people trapped in an enormous cube consisting of smaller cube rooms, and they need to work together to find the right path) Primer - (low-budget film about the effects of time travel) |

Children of Men is in my top 5 movies of all time.
I did not like 12 monkeys (I watched it twice as well to make sure), so have to disagree on that one.
As a side note, I'm looking for ones specifically on instant netflix to watch, so if anyone has any recommendations for those, I'd be more than interested... |

| I just saw Source Code which is directed by the same guy that did Moon. It was pretty entertaining, but I'm not so sure about the ending. Sunshine is a real reason to own a blu-ray player, but I think the ending lets it down. I did enjoy the new Tron, but haven't seen the original. |

Event Horizon. I love that film, cool concept.
I've always preferred End-Of-The-World style films. |

I can't believe how long it has been since the Matrix came out. That is up there along with Aliens and Predator. Another couple would have to be... Tremors The mist Starship troopers |

| Who thinks there should be a starship troopers game? Imagine that part where they have to defend the complex as it gets overrun. Someone up on the turret. People on the wall as they just climb up their own bodies to reach you. Just trying to hold out a lot like the end of each L4D level. That would be great fun. |

I would recommend these two:
Westworld - Featuring Yul Brynner as a malfunctioning, murderous robot at a futuristic vacation resort.
A Boy and His Dog - Featuring a very young Don Johnson in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, who gets taken into an underground society to be used as a breeding machine.
They're both older movies, but worth a look if you haven't seen them. |
