Pour one out for the Masons
THQ, the publisher behind Red Faction: Guerrilla, Red Faction: Armageddon and the downloadable tie-in, Red Faction: Battlegrounds, have decided to cut their losses with the Mars-based franchise.
THQ CEO Brian Farrell has informed investors that the series "did not resonate with a sufficiently broad console gaming audience". Going into further detail, he provided the following quote:
In today's hit-driven, core gaming business, even highly-polished titles with a reasonable following like Red Faction face a bar that continues to move higher and higher. Moving forward, our core game titles must meet a very high quality standard with strong creative and product differentiation, appeal to a broad audience, and be marketed aggressively. This could explain the permenant price reduction on Red Faction: Guerrilla DLC. This stance by THQ is of course a total 180 degrees from where they were just last year, as the company touted Red Faction: Armageddon as a bold, fresh start for the franchise that would encompass all media. After all, who could forget the SyFy movie that filled in the gap between Red Faction: Guerrilla and Red Faction: Armageddon?

If Red Faction: Battlegrounds had not been such a blatant cash-in on the franchise's name (Metacritic score: 52; TA Community score: 3.1), and if Red Faction: Armageddon had built on the critically acclaimed fully destructible sandbox of Red Faction: Guerrilla, we may instead be reading about Armageddon's sequel.
Alas, today we mourn the passing of a schizophrenic franchise. God speed Red Faction, god speed.

| A shame as I really enjoyed Armageddon. I just hope that this doesnt mean that they announce closure of Armageddon & Guerrilla's servers. |

| I've been working on Guerrilla for a while now, I hope they don't close any servers down for a least a few months. |

| ...if Red Faction: Armageddon had built on the critically acclaimed fully destructible sandbox of Red Faction: Guerrilla...then THQ would be in possession of COMMON SENSE! Something that companies today lack entirely. SAD. |

First Bulletstorm fails to turn a profit and now this. Two of the only unique and innovative titles I've played in recent years and they're getting discontinued. I do NOT like the direction things are heading.

| Red Faction has sucked since they moved away from RF 1 and 2's Gameplay, If they had stuck to that I would still be a fan, Loved shooting the undead mutants in the churchyard in RF 2 |

| I only started Guerilla a couple months ago and I wish I'd gotten into it sooner. Have yet to try the new one, but did hear it was disaapointing so it's a shame THQ is phasing it out. Especially when they have worse games to phase out like Homefront lol. |

| This is indeed sad news. While I did enjoy Arm, I missed the open world. But to give up on the series entirely? Stupid really. My guess is that they put this on the back burner for a while, but eventually we'll see another Red Faction game. |

| I would've bought Armageddon if they hadn't turned it into some crappy arcadey Dead Space shooter knockoff. Guerilla was such a cool concept; waging guerilla war on an open world Mars. What they did with Armageddon regressed the series. I'm just one tiny part of the reason this is happening, and I can't be the only person who loved this series and who decided to skip Armageddon. |

| Armageddon seemed to have slot of potential into a new world and had a good start on some great ideas and seemed to be a good stepping stone if they good have taken what they had there and put it into something even better. With all this being said it looks like I'll have to go to guerilla for PC to get my fix for total destruction till Battlefield 3 comes out. Looks like I'll be looking for PC gamers now. |

| Maybe they should fix the bugs with the PC version of Red Faction: Guerilla before they pack up their kit. |

Basically they are giving up, because they feel they can't wait the cut of what gamers want.
That's what i read from the quote anyway. Not a huge fan of Red Faction, but i know it was a solid well put together game. Shame to see a franchise die, But i am a firm believer in having new games come through.
Hopefully they come back with something that i can enjoy as much as people enjoyed Red Faction. |

Guerilla is easily one of the best games on the 360. Such an amazing campaign, and the multiplayer was top-notch.
From what I've seen of Armageddon it isn't the same in any way, much more linear and no multiplayer. This is a damn shame, I hope it gets picked up by someone someday and get a reboot that is more like Guerilla than anything else. |

I wonder if THQ explains to their investors how poorly run their servers are for say the previous WWE Smackdown Vs Raw title where you can mash buttons and you just basically stand still. Or the fact that you can fully utilize their online system even though they want their 10 bucks pound of flesh if you were to buy the game used or rent it?
I enjoyed the hell out of Red Faction: Guerrilla the little I played. I thought of picking up this past installment, but it really didn't sound that great. The point of the enjoyment of the first one was it was sandbox and the surrounding environment was destructible.
No i don't hate THQ just the fact that they seem to produce shoddy games that should be better, but are half assed. |
Need co-op achievements in Vegas 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Gears 2, Borderlands, and L4D. |
