WHHHHYYYYYY??? :(
Because there's technically nothing wrong. The fact that people are selling items that they later need is just crappy luck and/or planning. That said I'm fairly sure that Bethesda will patch this at some point, probably be editing Tonilla's dialogue tree so that it shows the upgrade armor option in addition to her other dialogue options instead of replacing them.

I sold two of the pieces... the armor and the gloves I believe. I still have the pickpocketing boots. Will I be able to finish the quest?

I'm so glad that I saw you needed that armour before I sold it. I learnt my lesson to check what happens when you do a quest after I finished the Escape from Cihdna Mine. If I had of only known to wait for an hour instead of letting the Forsworn run rampant I could have saved so many lives.

It's like selling your army uniform and then expecting not to get in trouble :)

It is not a bug per se, but it still sucks (and it happend to me too, because my own thieving armour was so much better than the stuff from the thieves guild). ... However: The game for example prevents me from selling or dropping several items because they are supposedly quest related. This is even true for a bunch of items, which did not get removed after I finished their respective quests. So I now have Flutes, Drums, Violins, amulets, rings and tons of other crap clogging up my inventory and reducing my carring limit (and it seems that I will never ever be able to drop them) ... but in the ONLY case where selling or dropping of some specific items destroys an entire questline and the availability of TWO achievements they did nothing to prevent that? That is just somehow incredibly lame. And not only that. To add insult to injury Bethesda went out of their way to prevent you from ever accquiring another thieves armour if you lost that oh so holy artefact. You can't steal it. You can't find it anywhere else. You can't loot it from the body of a dead thief (the bloody thing seemingly instantly vanishes into thin air).

Guess its also back to an old save for me ...

Had the same problem myself, easiest solution (short of starting new game) was to check through my old save points till i found the one where i had the armour, Took a bloody age though!

Right, I think the new patch has fixed this as I was having exactly the same trouble. If you go into the training room of the cistern where someone is poncing around with archery training. Examine the shelves on the far side of the room. I found a quite handy pair of Thieves Guild boots which did the trick nicely

I had the same problem as mentioned by Munkynuts77, after the latest patch, a new pair of boots canbe found in the training room. So I managed to upgrade the armour, finally. But still it seems I am not a full member of the guild, even though I have finished darkness returns. Is there anyway to fix this? Would I be able to get the achievement if I finish the city jobs? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I didn't sell mine, I did have a companion hold it tho who was killed randomly somewhere. I've done all the quests got them waiting for the ceremony, then managed to grab a new set from the training room. have had tonilla upgrade it, done the quest for her to setup the moon sugar deals with khajit now when I come back tho she's telling me to go to the ceremony doh!

There is also a pair of Thieves Guild Gloves located in The Ragged Flagon - Cistern between a bed and end table on the western wall. I had sold my original Thieves Guild armor and was lucky enough to find this.
