Check out the latest trailer
We wouldn't usually cover anything to do with the latest Windows operating system; at first glance it doesn't appear to be very relevant to gaining achievements or gaming in general. However, as we confirmed back in September, Windows 8 will be able to bring Xbox LIVE to the PC. This means that your Xbox 360 games, music, films and TV shows can be shared across the two Microsoft platforms.
The latest consumer preview shows the operating system in action. The app for Xbox LIVE allows users to view their achievements and friends. You will also be able to customise your avatar. One of the things that is demonstrated is the ability to start up your Xbox games on the PC, with Pinball FX 2 being the game of choice. Zen Studios have since confirmed that Pinball FX 2 will be coming to the Windows 8 platform.

Those of you who have a slightly longer attention span will want to check out this eight minute demonstration with Jensen Harris, director of program management on the Windows User Experience team.

The beta version of Windows 8 is available for download today from the Windows 8 consumer preview website. The full version is expected to be launched in Autumn 2012.

I've been using the Windows 8 dev build SDK for a little while, and although lot of functionality is chopped out, this operating system is very good. For me the choice was clear, I was ditching Windows for Chrome OS, but the way this system works and the fact that there will be Xbox LIVE integration that runs deeper as the updates come is very appealing.
My main issue at the moment is the fact that the original Kinect won't work with Windows 8. You'll need a new firmware build in a Kinect v1.0.1 with a price tag of £200+. That seems a little dirty to me.
I'll wait and see what Apple and Mountain Lion offers too, then decide from there. |

| I thought it was pretty cool even though my computer is three feet away from my TV. I think this would be better on a tablet, kind of like it adds some of the WiiU functions. |

Question to anyone in the US who has the Consumer Preview.
Pinball FX 2 is included in the Consumer Preview (in the US at least, dunno about anywhere else). Does the full live functionality also come in this version, like the achievements. There will be achievements, confirmed, just unsure if the 8 Beta version has left that out for now? |

ronnie42 said:So basically that will mean I can play my Halo Reach?I don't think so. From what I've seen in the last year or so that I've followed Windows 8, it's going to be just any game that can be played. They will most likely need to be games that were designed to be able to do it, so we'll probably see 8-capable 360 games starting this year. Things like Pinball FX 2 aren't just the 360 version being played on the PC. It may the same tables and gameplay, but it's a different game in itself, like any other game that's available on consoles and PC. Same game, but you can't play a 360 disc on PC, or a PS3 disc on a Wii. Newer games that, again, will likely start coming this year, will have the functionality to use the 360 version on a PC.
This is of course assuming that the developers decide to do that. I doubt that Microsoft would force developers to make their 360 games PC-capable. |

It's quite an improvement on the developer preview, but it somehow removed my bootloader list. You may have to rebuild your list if you want to dual boot.

http://goo.gl/MQhkvIf you include NT/2000, it throws off the pattern. |

http://goo.gl/MQhkvHa ha, pretty uncanny.
Vista was pretty boss, though - just got a bad stigma because people (and OEMs) were tying to load it onto old tech and underpowered hardware and then act surprised when it didn't work. On a pro computer it ran like a champ and the Windows Key to search feature was/is fantastic. |

Windows 8 consumer preview website's FAQ said:Windows 8 Consumer Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 7:
•Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster •RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit) •Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) •Graphics card: MicrosoftDirectX 9 graphics device or higherThis is very suprising and welcome news. That does not happen often when it comes to MS!
