Another blow for UK gamers and the future of Game Group

It has been confirmed that following the EA stock level crisis, another huge setback has hit GAME and Gamestation in the UK as Capcom have confirmed that their big releases Street Fighter x Tekken and Asura's Wrath will not be available for any platform through Game Group's high street stores.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Capcom offered a detailed confirmation of the news. Details regarding pre-orders are marked with our emphasis for concerned readers:

Unfortunately Capcom must confirm that Street Fighter x Tekken for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and Asura's Wrath, both scheduled for release on Friday March 9, will not be stocked by GAME or Gamestation either in their retail outlets or on their online stores operating in the UK and Ireland. Capcom wants to reassure its consumers that both these titles, including the Special Edition of Street Fighter X Tekken, will be available at a wide variety of retailers across the UK and Ireland.

For those consumers who have already placed a deposit for a pre-order for any of these titles then a full refund will be available - please contact your local GAME or Gamestation shop or visit the online stores.

All these titles listed above are available for pre-order or to purchase on day of release from the following outlets: HMV, Play.com, Amazon.co.uk, Shopto.net, The Hut and leading independent stockists as well as supermarket chains.

So there you have it; if you have a reservation with GAME or Gamestation it's time to head down to a store, pick up the phone or fire up your browser to obtain your full refund. Please remember though guys, whilst you might be angry, you'll be speaking to employees who are no doubt suffering as well. Right now the future for Game Group is looking shaky; it's not their fault.

Looking ahead of Capcom's impending releases, what does this mean for Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City? Well at the moment, it's unclear. Here's a statement from Capcom:

At present no decision has been made as to whether Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City, scheduled for release on PS3 & Xbox 360 on March 23 and PC on May 18 will be available to purchase from GAME/GamestationThese issues are a result of Game Groups troubles with obtaining credit to purchase stock. It looks like recovery for the company will now be an immense uphill battle, with rumours abound that bosses may pull the plug on GAME to prevent even greater losses.

We'll have more on the future of Game Group, affected releases and updates for you guys as they happen.

I always thought that these retailers would struggle with the inevitable increase in downloadable gaming but I didn't think it would happen so soon :(

Its a sad state of affairs for UK gaming. Yes they are often overpriced, but sometimes they have some decent sales on. I got some strategy guides from my local shop for 99p including dead space 2 and homefront.

After reading the whole of that other EA v GAME thread, you really do realise that a lot of people just use the shops as libraries, browsing for what they want they buying it online cheaper. Seen that happen with hmv/record stores over the last 5-10 yrs. Problem here is, GAME have nothing to fall back on.

Sucks to work in retail.

Not really a setback for me, I've been saying for a few weeks now that I'm going to start doing all my trade-ins, buying and pre-ordering from HMV, I have a friend who works there also.

At HMV, recently I've found that unlike GAME, you can trade-in for cash any day of the week, providing you have 2 forms of I.D, which is all right for me as I always have my Driving License and my Visa Debit on me at all times, I have always got more money at HMV whether I'm getting store credit or cash.

The only problem I can think of is that HMV have ALWAYS been more expensive when it comes to buying games.

I know people who work for Game and I feel really bad for them, it can't be easy having to deal with all the angry customers due to the recent setbacks. I personally decided to not shop at Game anymore after they messed up my preorder for Final Fantasy XIII-2, didn't give me my double reward points and then didn't stock Catherine despite several preorders being put down on it in my local store. But it's still a shame to see a store end up in this state, especially for the staff and the people who have to rely on Game as the only local game store.

Online is where it's at and has been for time, I used to love making regular trips to Gamestation, not so much for GAME cz where I'm at, they hardly even know what an achievement is or a game's console for that matter. But Gstation staff were always slick and ice cold, but when you come to happily pick up a game and the staff are discreetly advising you to nip across the road to CEX or take a trip to Asda to pick up Metal Gear Solid HD for almost £15 cheaper then what they're selling it for, it was kind of upsetting.

It's like 'she's' telling me to go and find a better woman cz she aint good enough no more, one of those "it's not you it's me things". Well anyway, im ranting, it's been fun Gamestation. All the best toast

They've had to cancel so much. Apparently they've had to cancel the new mario party for nintendo as well, amongst loads of others. A few chains have closed too. Not good. Can't imagine a world without game. My points from there have just been ridiculous over the years, I reckon I've saved like £100.

Wondering whether they will still be stocking the star wars console or not.

I have loads of games to trade in towards it, But i don't want to do it if they will just say "we aren't getting it anymore". I never shop at game/gamestation.

No point phoning and asking as they will prob just say yes until the last minute.

Well said, I've worked for a company on the brink before, it's not fun, and to have angry customers shouting at you while your future is uncertain must be terrible

Tomjeh said:I always thought that these retailers would struggle with the inevitable increase in downloadable gaming but I didn't think it would happen so soon :(Good point, here's what I believe related to it.
I don't support downloadable games as it takes out the tangible product which can then be traded in gaining back a substantial amount of the initial cost of the game, with downloads this just can't happen. Also if buying games from xbox only it removes the competition, to which they would simply go berserk with prices, so although we may say playstation is awful etc (which it really isn't) we have to be glad they are in the market as mentioned xbox would be a lot more expensive as a whole.

I think something is going on behind the scenes with Game, they were probably denied exclusive content deals or somethign which caused a fallout of the companies

Hmm this does seem to be getting more and more serious for Game group.

If I'm honest I'm not too bothered about the GAME store, but I DO like my local Gamestation, the staff there are pretty decent so hopefully they get bought up by someone else. If they do go I'll be left with HMV as my physical outlet for games (there is a CEX but I rarely go in there). Not a good prospect, as they are equally as vulnerable to going under due to their strict pricing.
