Hi all,
I've never really played as a mage in the Elder Scrolls games. If I ever played anything, it was a straight-up warrior-esque character. It's usually simpler that way. Just pick whether or not you want one or two handed weapons and use it the rest of the game.
Magic seems more complicated, so I come asking for help. I just don't have enough hands to use all the schools equally. Should I just stick with Destruction because it more directly leads to the death of those that attack me? Illusion seems like fun since I can turn my enemies against themselves and watch the carnage ensue. I'll definitely want to level up Conjuration at some point since I like the idea of having undead minions. While Restoration would definitely come in handy, I can't say I'm too eager to build it up... and Alteration can go screw.
Anyways, with so many options, what is a new level 1 mage to do? Should I just focus on Destruction for now since I have a few starter spells and they kill stuff pretty decently? Is there a strategy to juggling a few schools at a time?
Right now I'm just constantly running away from my enemies until my mana comes back a little bit, burn them, then start running away again. Rinse and repeat. Is there a better way to be a mage?
Thanks guys! Any advice to this novice is appreciated. |

| mages really suffer at low level you just need to grind through it and stick with destruction at mid and end game no one can beat the mage mine was taking out dragons and giants like they werent even there. Just make sure you get a good weapon and set of robes to help with mana regen focus on getting a huge mana pool and then health rather than the stamina as has little use to a mage |

work on alteration. it has by far some of the best bonuses in its skill tree. restoration also has a couple of good ones, and has the added benefit of self-preservation. i didn't really use conjuration or illusion on my mage, but enchanting is obviously a very viable option.
you may want to invest a few points into a weapon skill too. |

I've got a full mage myself and I will say, it is quite a rewarding experience. While crushing a skull with a stick is certainly gratifying, burning your enemies to death has it's own unique appeal.
If you are going to do a mage, DO NOT cripple yourself by relying on a weapon. You will get to a point where you won't need it. Until you get there, at low levels you definitely will want to take a follower with you to handle the melee-centric enemies. Any follower who's obviously carrying a beat stick will do the trick. Alternatively, a Flame Atronach is a really nice companion at low levels.
Whenever there is a possibility of an enemy nearby, sneak. Sneak everywhere. Basically, you always want to get the first hit on your enemies. If they are right in your face, then you're probably going to die. The Muffle spell is your friend for sneaking and it will level your Illusion skill really well.
For the most part, dual casting Destruction spells is not worth the damage/mana cost, unless you have Impact (perk, see below). You'll do more damage/mana with two of the same spell vs. one dual cast version.
Some perks you should try to get as early as possible:
* Impact (Destruction): Dual-cast destruction spells will stagger most enemies. -- This one is invaluable. It will stagger everything up to and including Ancient Dragons. There's a bit of timing to it. * Recovery (Restoration): Recover Magicka Faster. -- It should be pretty obvious why you'd want this. * Quiet Casting (Illusion): Your casting, from any school, is silent. -- Goes with the sneaking thing.
There are lots of fun spell combo's to use in the game and a lot of the fun is figuring them out. |

Besides the great advice above, don't forget to do the quests for the individual mages in the mage school so you have access to the higher level spells. Oh and if a fight really seems to be going against you, don't be afraid to temporarily crank down the difficulty during the fight. This saved me a few times. Elder Scrolls is good for not giving you 50 enemies at a time ( or more like in SR3 and so forth ). In fact usually it's 1 or 2 at a time so take your time and don't rush into a fight where there might be lots of enemies ahead. |

Hey, thanks guys. I was starting to wonder if I would hear back about this.
Knowing what perks to go after is definitely a big help. If possible, I want to go full mage (though leveling up a weapons skill will help for that Level 50 achievement in the end). For the most part I'm just running around like a chicken with the head cut off as things chase me until I get my magika back, especially if my companion finds themselves stuck behind a door/gate and unable to help.
It's rare I get too overwhelmed, or in a situation that I can't run away from, but those moments definitely do/will happen. Any more advice you guys have on perks to look forward to and just some potential strategies for handling those tougher battles as a full mage is always appreciated! |
