Super-massive lots of Spoilers
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
I think the best way to illustrate what was wrong with the ending is to talk about what I was expecting. I was expecting the Crucible to be a trap - like the Citadel - that the plans were left by the Reapers for the organics to build as their own doom. I thought this from near the beginning of the game, and spent most of the game wondering how it would play out - maybe the Reapers couldn't design it fully themselves, and the countless generations of organic life is being used as a calculator to 'crunch the numbers' so to speak, getting infinite attempts to finish the plan with their organic ingenuity.
I wasn't sure what the Crucible would do exactly - but it wouldn't have matter much, as I expected the final boss fight to occur as Shepard desperately fought to stop the Crucible from activating after turning it on. I expected an endboss - probably the Illusive Man under Direct Control from Harbinger, and Shepard would sacrifice him/herself to stop the Catalyst in the end.
I spend my hours of Mass Effect 3 gameplay wondering about the origin of the Reapers - the geth storyline shaped my thoughts, and I decided they were probably created to protect those that made them and spiraled out of control. Perhaps, somewhat like the Krogan, these robots were turned into real AI in the middle of some terrible war, uplifted without thinking through the consequences - no thought to what would happen post-war. Maybe they lost the war, and the reapers are trying to breed organic life back into some semblance of their creator species. |

Made sense to me. Don't mind no final boss fight A bit more about how the reapers came to be would of been nice but not essential.
Honestly I really didnt have a problem with it at all, remember its the journey that counts not the destination. |

Watch this video, then see if you still like it as much. It's well done and covers all the plot holes in detail.

I too, liked it at first. I thought most fans just didn't like the ending because of Shepard's fate. I was wrong. |

| #9 is my favorite - I really hated having to just go along with the Catalyst's plan when my Shepard was a complete renegade |

Im also one of those people that enjoyed the ending. And Shepherd will live if you have a high enough effective military strength. I realize there are plot holes, but do you honestly think they will just end this franchise being as hot and as big of a money maker as it is? There WILL be a follow up to this series in some shape or form. It is EA after all. They may pick up on those holes later on.
BTW. I do disagree with Bioware releasing an alternate ending for this. |

Have to admit all this went completely over my head but I should've known something was up. I had my doubts about Shepard becoming a reaper for a while but I never would've considered the last 10 minutes to be completely within his mind. Really should've paid more attention to Harbinger's lines.
I wish they could've elaborated on this all a bit more but it seems like EA might've had something to do with them cutting out more segments to prevent pushing it back again or just reduce costs. So I get the feeling this whole Extended Cut being released for free is both to prevent further backlash against Bioware and a big "I told you so" from Bioware to EA. Or at least I hope that's the case. |

I do think that it is valid to use the many, many plot holes to illustrate how bad the prescribed ending is, but honestly it does kind of miss the point. What is really horrible about the ending is that there is no choice whatsoever, other than a single prescribed ending in which Shepard dies, the reapers are gone, and the relays are destroyed. Casey Hudson promised "wildly different conclusions" based on the choices we made across the three games, but that wasn't the case at all. Also, even if the game were *meant* to have just one outcome, you just don't scrap the series antagonist in the final moments and break out deus ex machina; that's just really lazy writing. It didn't work for BSG or Matrix, what made Hudson think it would work for Mass Effect?
The Indoctrination Theory is pretty decent, and it would make the one and only ending orders of magnitude better than it is, but sadly the Extended Cut DLC will debunk it, and in any case it would not address the lack of variety in the outcomes.
Casey Hudson joins the ranks of Lucas, Spielberg, and Romero. How do you fuck franchises.
What gets me is how hard it was to screw up Mass Effect. It would have been so easy to get right. |
