Beat-match gameplay hits XBLA
I have to say I was caught a little off-guard by how Rock Band Blitz actually plays. Unlike Amplitude, Frequency and Rock Band Unplugged, this game doesn’t feature four button points within each lane and you don’t lock in tracks. Instead, each track only utilizes two buttons (Right and Left Trigger, Right and Left Bumper, or a pair of face buttons depending on your preference) and all tracks keep playing throughout the whole song. Your goal is to maximize points by switching tracks whenever you’d like and using power-ups that you earn by reaching certain score milestones.
Each song has several checkpoints within it. Your goal is to try to max out your available multiplier before the checkpoint is reached. You do this by focusing on a track (there can be up to five) until you completely fill in its color. The power ups you use help you earn even more points and, as noted before, those go towards unlocking further power-ups. There is no difficulty in Rock Band Blitz. The better you play, the more intense it gets, which really allows any player at any skill level to jump in. If the goal was accessibility, they certainly nailed it.
As promised in the initial announcement, the full DLC catalog for Rock Band 3 is available in this title. Also, the Harmonix rep I spoke to did confirm that there will be no export fee for the 25 tracks included in Blitz. This means that there will be no extra fee to transfer the tracks to your Rock Band 3 catalog. For the price of an arcade game, you get 25 new tracks AND a pretty awesome title that will certainly challenge you. This seems like it will be an insta-buy (at least for Rock Band players) come its release this summer. |

I'm a little disappointed on this one... I was pretty much expecting an Amplitude/Frequency remake with the Rock Band name now attached to it. Having no difficulty doesn't really give me a challenge to strive for. I've never been one to try to just beat my own high score (unless it's for an old school arcade game). I'll definitely give it a try though and make my own personal thoughts about it in the end anyway .
Good work Matrarch! |

Good work Matrarch! Thanks. :) It really wasn't quite what I was expecting at all, but it IS fun.
One of the power-ups available was a pinball one. Every now and again, you'd see a purple note and hitting that would activate the power-up. In this case, a pinball would be released and you'd have to try to match the active track the pinball came down on to keep it going. It was pretty fun. Not Amplitude or Frequency, but fun in its own right. :) |

| This sounds like its going to be on those games that is good for 5 minutes but really doesn't make you want to play it all the time. It would probably be better released as some kind of phone app from the look and sound of it. |

| Sounds alot like FreQ and Amplitude as far as concept, and I love it., Is it supposed to be the runway style like Amplitude? Will likely be a day one purchase for me. |

It doesn't mean it's easy; basically you can only play on Expert. I played several songs at the booth at PAX and believe me there is plenty of difficulty. |
