Okay, here we have another pointless Shinerbock88 topic. I was driving a long drive home earlier and listening to the radio and thought about this and wondered how other people would answer. I don't know why I think of stupid stuff like this, but it always happens because I tend to over think everything. Anyway, moving on...
++The Question++
If you could only listen to one band for the rest of your life, who would it be?
++Rules++
This seems like a pretty straight forward question, but it's not. When I say "one band" I do mean one band, but they can continue making new music. You just have to listen to their music only for the rest of your life. Just imagine if every band member is alive and well and they will put out new music for the rest of your life. Based on what you know about these bands now, who would you pick?
I also want you to list your favorite band. I want to see how many people would choose a band other than their fave.
Feel free to add any other info about your choices. If the band is not your fave, tell us why you didn't pick them.
I'll go first (duh!).
The One Band to rule them all: Foo Fighters
My Favorite Band: U2
The Why:
Foo Fighters are not even close to my favorite band. I'd say they're around #10 or so. The reason why I picked them is because they have never disappointed me. There is no bad Foo Fighters song IMO, some are just better than others. All their music is solid and Dave Grohl is one of the most talented people in the history of music IMO.
I didn't pick U2 because, even though they're by far my favorite band ever, they did make me ask "WTF is this jizunk?!" more than once (most of the early 90's stuff).
And that's all there is to it. So take 2 minutes out of your busy schedule and reply to my thread, dammit! Okay, NEXT! |

The "One": King's X
The "Fave": Too many to narrow it down; but if I absolutely had to, Dream Theater. Other choices would be Pink Floyd, CCR, Toy Matinee and Beer For Dolphins.
Why King's X? They have a wide range of musical styles, great songwriting, play great live shows, and they possess pretty good technical skills. They always have a song that speaks directly to how I am feeling at the moment and their music has never disappointed me ... ever. Dug Pinnick never ceases to find the groove and has a terrific vocal ability. Ty Tabor comes up with some great licks, is a pioneer in alternate guitar tunings, and can sing as well as Dug. Tabor's music writing has notes of a Beatles influence at times ... at others it is pure rock and metal. Plus ... as a three-piece, they sure blow a lot of four and five piece bands out of the water.
Why not Dream Theater? Dream Theater is awesome. Great technical ability, great songs, great concept albums. The best keyboardist/pianist in rock today, Jordan Rudess. One of the best guitarists today, John Petrucci. Great bass player in John Myung (sure ... he is no Tony Levin, but Rudess, Petrucci and Portnoy play with Levin in a side project ... Liquid Tension Experiment ... if you haven't heard their music LOOK THAT SHIT UP). They HAD one of the best drummers around ... Mike Portnoy. Their latest album, without Portnoy, felt a bit flat to me. Not only is there no more Portnoy (and I am holding onto the hope that they can reconcile), but James LaBrie's voice won't last forever. I don't want Dream Theater to be like the other great bands that had awesome lead singers that they tried to replace ... Van Halen replacing David Lee Roth (eww ... Hagar), Journey losing Steve Perry, and the short time Motley Crue did not have Vince Neil in their employ, to name but a few.
For further info ...
Not Pink Floyd because let's face it ... without Roger Waters, fuck that noise.
Not Creedence Clearwater Revival because, while wonderful to unwind with a few dozen beers after a long day's work, a real reunion will never happen because Tom Fogerty is dead and John Fogerty has traveled a little too far down the road to country music for my taste.
Not Toy Matinee (otherwise known as Kevin Gilbert), because his musical genius was extinguished far too early. Great musician, great songwriter, but there will be no more music from him.
Not Beer For Dolphins (otherwise known as Mike Keneally), because some of his work is just too far out there ... has to be since he played with Zappa. Great, interesting music ... but way out in left field. |

There we go, just like MB did it is what I'm looking for!
I've never really listened to Dream Theater. I've heard 2-3 of their songs, but they were all outstanding. I'll have to look into them a little more. I really like all the other bands you've mentioned to, though I've not heard of Beer for Dolphins. Interesting name lol.
I actually did like Van Hagar. I was a kid when Roth left and I I didn't like Sammy Hagar before Van Halen, so I thought they'd suck by default, but 5150 was an outstanding album IMO. I don't like Hagar post Van Halen either, but I thought he fit well with Van Halen. I don't like Van Hagar as much as Van Halen with Diamond Dave (it's not even close) on the vocals, but I enjoyed Hagar in Van Halen. I can't stand Hagar's band Chickenfoot, though I love Satriani and Anthony. I can't not like Satriani. I used to play the guitar (I sucked at it) and I used to try and play Joe Satriani, Ing-vay Malmsteen (I know it's Yngwie lol), Eric Johnson (Cliffs of Dover is my fave and it's an awesome piece of work IMO), Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Hendrix, Steve Vai and many more... emphasis on the phrase "try to play."
What do you think of the new Van Halen with Roth back? I've only heard two songs from their new album and I like them both. I don't know if it's because Roth is back and I am just excited about it or if the songs are actually any good, but I really like the new stuff. |

Sammy Hagar is like the rock version of Jimmy Buffett. Can't stand either of them.
Can't say that I've listened to the new Van Halen ... after Hagar and Cherone, I pretty much wrote them off. Besides, knowing Dave and Eddie ... how long do you honestly think this will last? Not to mention I can't stand Wolfie ... wasn't much of a fan of Anthony's because his bass lines were so simple a 'tarded chimp could play them (the running joke in my college music classes would be playing the "Michael Anthony Symphony" ... a stream of sixteenth notes in the same pitch over and over and over), but at least Anthony wasn't in the band because his daddy wanted him to be.
Great choices of guitarists to want to learn to play ... though I've never really been a fan of Satch. I've always liked Vai more. Rhoads made Ozzy ... after he died, nothing really felt right about his music to me. When I think of Ozzy ... it is either his time with Sabbath or with Randy Rhoads. Eric Johnson is so pure, crisp and clean ... who wouldn't want to play like him?
If you replaced Satch with SRV, subbed John Petrucci for Yngwie (he is good, but in a Michael Angelo kind of way), and took out Hendrix in favor of Steve Stevens (made Billy Idol and later became a pretty decent flamenco player), you'd have my list of who I wanted to play like when I was younger ... guitar-wise. Bass-wise ... Tony Levin (famous session musician; played for Peter Gabriel and others), Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan ... a lot of greats.
Seriously, check out Mike Keneally/Beer for Dolphins ... VERY unique and a badass guitar player. Same with Kevin Gilbert/Toy Matinee ... if you haven't heard of him before. Pure genius ... and Sheryl Crow would never have made it big without him writing for her "Tuesday Music Club". Another good musician to check out ... well a couple, actually ... is Nuno Bettencourt's solo work (played for Extreme) and the same with Billy Sheehan (played for Mr. Big/David Lee Roth's solo albums). |

The Foo Fighters is a good choice, they have a pretty wide range of songs.
My choice: Nirvana
My Favourite Band (right now): Violent Soho (not a very well known Australian Grunge band)
I went with Nirvana because they have such a large catalogue of songs, with a wide variety of genres - there's something for every mood in your life. There also aren't any bad Nirvana songs, just some are better than others as you said about The Foo, Shiner.
Where as while my favourite band has a variety, they doesn't have as large of one and when your picking something to listen to for the rest of your life, you are going to get sick of them pretty quickly if they've only got one to two albums.
Tough choice though... I'd miss listening to stuff like Tenacious D, Neil Young, The Beatles, Men At Work, (I'm going to stop because this list will go on forever otherwise) etc, etc... |

D'oh! I should've clarified even more. I don't mean listening to only what the band has out now, I am talking about if they continued to make music and that's how I want people to view the question. I chose the Foo Fighters because I'm pretty sure they'd keep making great music. You can even count bands with dead members like Nirvana who is a great choice btw. Imagine what they'd have accomplished if Cobain were still alive... of course we wouldn't have the Foo Fighters if he did live (unless Courtney Love tore the band apart lol). I'll update my first post and hope I can clear up what I am asking.
MB, you're 100% right about Rhoads and Ozzy. He made Ozzy. I don't like any Ozzy without Rhoads except for a few songs. Maybe 1 every couple of albums. One of the two songs I could actually play well on the guitar was Crazy Train (the other was Stairway to Heaven which is probably a song that most guitarists learn in their early years). The whole thing, not just certain parts... I haven't played since '93 and now I wish I'd never stopped lol. I may get another one one day so I can continue sucking out loud at it. It's a fun hobby even if you do suck! And I doubt Dave and Eddie will be able to stand each other for too much longer. If they're not at each others throats yet I'm sure they will be soon. I forgot all about Nuno. He's one of my faves too. I absolutely love Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee. |

Mickey Burns said:Sammy Hagar is like the rock version of Jimmy Buffett. Can't stand either of them.I'm gonna +1 this because I don't have a +2 button.
The One: CunninLynguists and/or Blackalicious. Probably would lean toward CunninLynguists just because they have twice the catalog. And If I may, I'd also put The Adam Carolla Show podcast here in a heartbeat.
The Fave: Immortal Technique. Why no Immortal Technique on infinite loop? If you're asking then you've never heard Immortal Technique. He makes Rage Against the Machine sound like Katy Perry bubblegum. So highly politicized is he that a loop of it would turn me into an even grumpier old man even faster than I already am. And nobody needs that.
Also rans for Fave: Andrew Bird - I don't understand my man crush on him, but I have one nonetheless. Wouldn't put him on infinite loop because he's more downtempo than up and I need uptempo. Also ran #2: Flogging Molly. No reason why they couldn't be The One. |

The "one" band = Pink Floyd.
They won't make anymore music and I could listen to Dark Side and The Wall forever.
Favourite band = Pink Floyd again though other bands can take the lead depending on the mood I am in. Bang Camaro, Young The Giant, Rise Against are just a few... |

This is a tough question for me since I've listened to so many bands. I don't like picking favorites, but if I had to, it would probably be Iron Maiden. For the most part, they don't have any bad albums, and when you span a career over 30 years, that's quite an accomplishment.
As for one band, I had to go through my music catalog. Not an easy choice, but I think I would lean towards Judas Priest. Iron Maiden is very close though. So close that I've flip-flopped several times while writing this post.
Black Sabbath - They wouldn't be a bad choice since you could choose from the Ozzy or Dio catalog depending. Plus there were two other vocalists who had small contributions. Main reason I wouldn't go for them however, is while they had some great music, I personally feel their entire discography has some weak points and some of their songs I do get tired of hearing over and over.
Maximum The Hormone - An odd choice, but one thing that I love about these guys is their musical style. They cover anywhere between 2 and 4 styles a song thanks to everyone contributing vocals. You have the death vocals, the drummer with her pop vocals, and the rock vocals in between. However, they have a small discography, and as fun as they are to listen to, I could see myself getting tired of them quickly. Plus death vocals sound weird (to me) in Japanese.
Iron Maiden - It's hard for me not to pick them. Being the band who got me into Heavy Metal, I still remember the first song I heard by them (Hallowed Be Thy Name). They have some great songs with The Trooper, The Clansman, Fear of the Dark just to name a few. And having a career that spanned 30 years, there's plenty of great songs to be had. Plus, having multiple lead singers, you have more than one style. The two albums with Blaze Bayley don't mix things up too much and are generally weak overall other than a couple songs, there were also two albums produced by the band's original singer, Paul Di'anno. Fairly solid albums, and they had a different sound as opposed to when Bruce was the lead singer, so it's almost like getting two different bands in one. The only reason I'm not going with Iron Maiden is they don't have THAT album. They have lots of great songs, but it seems most of their albums have one song (and most times, it is only one), that you can just skip over.
Judas Priest - It wasn't easy, but I decided to go with Priest. Like Maiden, they had multiple lead singers. Rob Halford with his vocal style, and for a short time, Tim "Ripper" Owens. Owens is nice to have as he can mix it up if you tire of Halford's voice, but there's a reason Halford is referred to as The Metal God. They have a few songs that I don't particularly care for and those songs are worse than Maiden's bad songs, but as a whole, they have about the same amount of studio albums over the same amount of time (roughly). But there are a few reasons I picked Priest over Maiden. The songs that are hits are more memorable, and just have you wanting to throw your fist in the air. As for the albums, they've produced what may be my favorite album of all time with Painkiller. And that's not even mentioning British Steel or Screaming for Vengeance or such hit songs as The Ripper, Cathedral Spires, and a cover of Diamonds And Rust. And who doesn't love singing along to Ram It Down?
There's also the fact that the Priest killed the Maiden in the Metal Church. |

My choice is Bad Religion. Intelligent punk rock that still carries meaning and a damn great tune after 30 years at it is something special. |

This is very easy for me considering my favorite band is the only band that I've been listening to for the past nine months.
One and fave:Between the Buried and Me
Very technically sound band who delivers time after time. They're one of the most unique and technically gifted metal bands around these days. Include the fact that they pepper their songs with polka/bluegrass/60's/70's style bits, there's not a metal band who sounds anything like these guys. |
My teeth taste funny today. They seem more jagged than normal. |

Their are a bunch, but if I had to pick just one, it would Rise Against. I can't seem to get enough of their songs.
But I honestly wouldn't want to just listen to them. As their are at least 20-30 bands that I love listening to and it really depends on my mood. I like the instrumentals to the majority of Rise Against songs, but I like listening to metal/rock music in general. Especially ones that have a female vocalist, like Flyleaf, Evanescence, and In This Moment. |

Mine would be The Beatles or Led Zeppelin. If I had to pick one though, I would probably go with The Beatles. I've loved all their music since I was kid and really got into them once I entered High School. I still frequently listen to their albums. I couldn't even really name a favorite album by them cause they're all so damn good! |
