Hard to decide but when it comes right down to it I have to pick better game play over story...

Without trying to offend anyone, I think a well-executed story but marred gameplay mechanics would be better than a game with great gameplay and a story that makes me want to blend my feet.

I think gameplay should TELL THE STORY. I don't think they need to go in one direction or another, they just seem to rarely have a creative way of telling story with gameplay. More often it's simply gameplay VS story, and you can tell with Mass Effect that it's not sure what it wants to be, a movie or a shooter with rpg elements (bear in mind it's my favorite game series). You're gonna spend a lot of time just shooting stuff and there's no way to avoid it, and in between you get "cinematic" that forces you to do things too and say things you'd never imagine your Shepard say (and they call it a role-playing game, "choices" hah, I guess it's like if the Dungeon Master read your lines for you).
In ME3 this got to a critical level. Less dialogue options, no way to be neutral, forced situations you could solve if the game gave you manual control (you can't pass an area because it's full of enemies for example.... but you have killed much harder stuff before and you could do it if you weren't stuck in cinematic. You could also easily shoot an enemy before they disappear with an important object... but the game won't give you control of the cinematic and Shepard just stands there as you watch... feels like cheap plot device). In this one though, they've come up with a "skip story" mode. Obviously the majority of people in and out of the industry think story is not as important as gameplay, and this shows it. We don't get an option to "skip combat".

That said I pick gameplay over story (precisaly because you can't skip it). Usually it makes me stop playing a game when it gets to a really frustrating point.... I wanted to like Outland, it sounded and looked interesting, but that level of precision jumping gives me nightmares. If one day we are able to have a "skip combat" option I know, the travesty!) I might try some games I'd have avoided.
I also like games for the atmosphere and couldn't care less if some of them have good stories. English is my second language so growing up I've played many games with no idea wtf the story was about. (not to mention my time with an Atari) I think a good story is important, and I (really) wish they were improved, but I can find that elsewhere anyway.

Hopefully there will be more games where gameplay and story come together.

DragonessHera said:I almost quit playing Mass Effect due to the bad gameplay. The story kept me going and thankfully the gameplay improved 100 fold with Mass Effect 2.OMG, how pathetic.

ME1 was the only RPG in the series and therefore the only good title in the trilogy. The rest was just dumb shooter-ware.
2 and 3 only kept me tucked to it because of the story (which quite frankly was a big, bad mistake considering that shitload of an ending).

Also, I have to disagree with your opinion on Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. I didn't think it was either broken, or dated. The mechanics were just complex enough to avoid being boring, yet didn't distract your attention from the incredible story being told. This game was what other games should try to be. A tremendous story that is FUN to play.
The glowing orbs everywhere and some of the fighting seemed very unoriginal to me. Also, why couldn't we fall off of platforms when we climbed them? That made it uneventful as there was no thrill. I still love the game though.

I've actually been distracted by the orbs and other things that I haven't been able to finish the game, which is unfortunate considering how much praise it's gotten. I just haven't been able to get into it. I suppose I should try harder.

Of the two, I would take story over gameplay, case in point: Deadly Premonition.

Story is the most important part of a game for me, but I actually voted "good gameplay, bad story". If gameplay is so awful you lose all desire to touch the game, then the story doesn't really matter anymore. On the otherhand, I have enjoyed games like Borderlands where there is little to no story but excellent gameplay.
I aim to misbehave!

For me, it has to be gameplay. I can live through a crap story as long as the controls and camera angles are decent. That also includes non-repetitive gameplay...

An god story just can't pull a game out of the abyss if the gameplay is horrible: Alone in the Dark anyone?

If you can't get sucked into the story. How much fun can the gameplay really be?

If I wanted a great story so bad I'd watch a friggin DVD. A Great story can really enhance a game (Bioshock) but at the heart of it, games are about DOING something whether that be part of a story or not.

I pick story over gameplay.

For me, gaming is an experience of learning something new. I love those games will lead me to do some thinking. I would say this poll is very similar to

"Do you like to drive and adventure? = Story
or
"Driving a Formula One racing car on a track?" = Gameplay

Everyone should have a different point of views on this.

Well, actually that was my point anyways.
If there are convincing games that aren't having any story at all, that means that games with bad stories can be good as well.

games must have very good gameplay, thats the whole point in playing a game.. if the story is good aswell that would be a welcome bonus.

Story with bad gameplay. Or as I like to call it, Silent Hill. wink Fortunately, that's one game that actually gets genuinely scary when you struggle to make your character run down a corridor. laugh
