Phoenix C64 has just submitted some Game Info for Borderlands:
Sub Genre change from Dungeon Crawler to Action RPG
Phoenix C64 said:this game is basically the same as DEAD ISLAND, except instead of aliens on pandora, you're killing zombies on an island.
both games have/are: - 1st person shooter - loot intensive - have health system with healing "potions" - vendors - story (even if only a little) - different classes - leveling system with skills/talents - single playable - multiplayer up to 4 players together - quests and side quests - free roam / sandbox to a certain point (you can't access all areas unless you unlock them by progressing in story)
so, as dead island is considered action-rpg i consider borderlands should be action-rpg too, not a dungeon-crawler.

| Please refer to Dead Island - Genre Info submissions for further discussions about Dungeon Crawlers for the moment. Your argument is valid although inverse to what I would have expected. Dead Island is more likely a Dungeon Crawler than Borderlands being an Action-RPG. A possible clarification of the Genre Info page should make it clearer. |

I should clarify my comments, as now that I post it I see how seriously this is taken around here:
1) Borderlands mixes FPS and RPG mechanics, if FPSs are Action Games, then this should be considered Action-RPG. In fact, there probably isn't a better example of the sub-genre.
2) I meant Diablo 2, as the original Diablo could certainly be considered a Dungeon Crawler. (You could probably make an argument for D2 as well, but I don't want to hear about it)
3) In my opinion, examples of Dungeon Crawlers would include Ultima Underworld or the original Might & Magic series. The only one I've seen in recent years is Legend of Grimrock, which was for PC only (and awesome). |

Diablo, even Diablo 2 is a Dungeon Crawler. A game, like Borderlands, including Action elements, be it H&S-esque combat à la Diablo or FPS style gunplay like Borderlands, does not change the fact that in this case these mechanics are merely enabling mechanics to the game that is a Dungeon Crawler at heart.
Consider the loot mechanics, the replayable environments with repopulating enemies, quest style, the encouragement to replay the game, levelling your character even further, etc. All these are key elements to Dungeon Crawlers. |

Billy Horrible has just submitted some Game Info for Borderlands:
Genre change from Role-Playing to Shooter Sub Genre change from Dungeon Crawler to First Person Shooter
Billy Horrible said:I understand why one would place it in the role-playing genre, but Borderlands is first and foremost a first person shooter. Or, as wikipedia currently says, "a first person shooter with role playing elements". Sure, some RPG elements can be found, but the core is a first person shooter.
It's the same as Portal 2 being called a platformer - while good arguments can be made for it being a puzzle game (and technically even a first person shooter), the first gameplay mechanic is that of a platformer.

Now that I submitted the changes (my first), I suddenly see a whole thread about the genre changing :-)
As seen in the information I submitted along with the change, Borderlands is considered an FPS with RPG elements - not the other way around (see also wikipedia).
The box itself states that it "combines frantic first-person shooting action with accessible role-playing character progression" - key word here being "accessible"; while the game is certainly hard-core in FPS, the RPG elements will be considered 'light' when seen next to 'real' RPG games.
If you're still in doubt, go play Skyrim or Fallout 3 - both role-playing games. Both have said the above said Dungeon Crawler / RPG elements, and both feature those elements much more prominent than Borderlands. Conversation with other characters, for instance, is in Borderlands (practically) non-excistent. At heart, Borderlands is a first person shooter, it just chose use some RPG elements as the narrative style. |

We do not take into consideration what other sites, or even the developer/publisher, define a game as. This is because every site has it's own definitions for what defines a genre, and thus our genre definitions are unique to this site (at least the subtleties). The same goes for publishers. By our site definition, Borderlands fits firmly in the RPG genre, using guns as the combat weapon.
Thank you for your submission. |

| Borderlands is a dungeon crawler, since there are caves and similar to explore and you can collect loot. |
