I'm seriously considering getting into this series (hoping I can nab Mass Effect 1 and 2 for around $30 today if I'm lucky).

For Mass Effect 3 though, I'm considering just burning through the one multiplayer-only achievement (Defender) so I can play each game from start to finish at my leisure without concerning myself about servers potentially going down someday or any achievements potentially becoming unobtainable.

I can do that right? I don't need to play through the single player campaign to get the Defender achievement?

Would playing through any of the cooperative stuff in multiplayer on Mass Effect 3 spoil any story elements? Or am I safe to play around with that as I please, and earn any achievements I might need, until I go ahead and start from Mass Effect 1?

No you do not need to play single player to get it and playing the multiplayer won't ruin any of the story

It will be hard to find them both for 30...looks like ME1 is getting hard to find

Can easily find ME1 on eBay, it's just a matter of finding a reasonably priced, decent quality one that isn't in that disgusting Platinum Hits casing. ME1 is also only $15 new on Newegg, though again, Platinum Hits lol.

EDIT: Can get ME1 and 2 brand new on Newegg for $35. Maybe I'll just suck it up and get them on there, tough to beat that price... even if ME1 looks gross lol. Comes with Mass Effect's 80msp DLC for free at least, I think.

Dreakon, if you are avoiding the Platinum Hits version, you're not going to get any free DLC. That's the only version that includes DLC with it. It's only 80MSP though, so if you really dislike the case that much I don't think $1 would be that much.

Yeah, I noticed that. As much as I hate the Platinum Hits casing, I'm glad I went and nabbed them off of Newegg last night. Getting both games brand new for $35 (no tax, free shipping) seems like a steal.

Now to find Mass Effect 3 for roughly $30... then it's like I got all three for the price of one new game... plus tax!
