I just got all three Mass Effect games. I'm going to start with ME1 and go from there.
I'm hoping I can avoid like 20 playthroughs to get everything, but I want my first playthrough to just be sort of fun and not thinking as much.
With as few spoilers as possible, could anyone offer up a little advice of things to look out for to keep my first playthrough productive (achievement-wise) that doesn't impact the decisions I want to make?
A few other questions... 1) As I was making my new character, it seemed to want to force me to be a Soldier. I tried "editing" those details before the game started but it only gave me the option to change my first name... nothing else. According to the walkthrough, Adept is better for grinding the biotic achievements. Do I get to choose my class somewhere along the line?
2) I actually kind of like the Soldier class (it seems more my style), I'm guessing I'll need an additional playthrough beyond the Insanity one to grind the biotics if I stick with Soldier, right? And maybe even another for any tech achievements?
3) For the ally achievements, if I do three playthroughs as a Soldier (normal, hardcore, insanity) with two different allies each playthrough, I'm guessing that I'll eventually have a poor blend of allies on my squad? Since they all seem to have their own blend of biotics, tech and combat. As a Soldier, is there a preferred order in which to pair off the allies in each consecutive playthrough? Like Kaiden and Wrex maybe for the first playthrough, then Ashley and someone for hardcore, etc. I just don't want to get stuck with a god awful combo of squadmates on any playthrough because I was careless the first one.
I guess I would need to find/unlock all of the potential squadmates before proceeding through too much of the story as well?
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated! |

| Do the liara ally achievement first as that is the hardest save garrus and wrex for insanity run through as garrus can give the mako overshields. |

I'm sorry, I literally started playing the game about an hour ago. Never played a Mass Effect before so it's all a little foreign to me.
If I'm concerned about achievements, would it be important to find/unlock all of the squadmates before I do any missions after arriving at the Citadel for the very first time? |

| You have to go to the citadel to get the mission after you become a spectre you get the mission to rescue liara but don't complete any of the any other missions until after you have liara in your group. |

Are there any preferences in who I would want as a squadmate alongside Liara? Assuming I am a Soldier.
Also, what kind of repercussions would I be looking at for wanting to be a Soldier? In terms of the number of playthroughs I would want to do? Would I have to do a few extra ones just to grind the biotic and tech achievements? |

| You wouldn't need to do more playthroughs to do the biotic and tech you can start a new game and grind kills on pinnical station, i'd go with 1st playthrough liara and Ashley, 2nd tali and Kaiden, 3rd wrex and garrus with it being easiest difficulty first hardcore second and insanity 3rd. |

Thanks man, I really appreciate the advice. The game is a bit overwhelming for a novice to the series, especially when I am hoping to knock some achievements out of the way as well on the first playthrough! |

So it would be a good idea to do as many Assignments as possible before progressing through the main missions?
(if I have my lingo correct) |

Also, I wouldn't have been a soldier. The adept seems to be the best. I was a soldier and kept having to queue up my team mates powers :/
Bit late now, I know but I so would have changed my character had I realised earlier. |

Soldier seems up my alley though, especially in the latter games when the AI is perhaps a little more self sufficient (or so I hear). I'm a bit more shooter-guy than RPG/tactics-guy. |

| I'm a running/gunning guy myself but those adept/biotic powers come in handy for your insane playthrough. Throw, hack and the freeze one where always being used, and to have had more control over those would have made it easier. The Krogan are the toughest, and to be able to throw them is indispensable. |

You're going to need 3 playthroughs either way with the first Mass Effect (if you plan on 100%ing it) as I'm sure you're aware. Squadmates aren't really a big issue on the difficulties - just make sure you have a little bit of everything, be it from a hybrid (Kaidan, Wrex, Garrus) or a pure (Tali, Liara, Ashley.) Pick a seperate two for each playthrough and stick with them, doing all possible sidequests you can until you pop their respective achievements, then feel free to use whoever you wish for the rest of said playthrough.
For a fun first playthrough without the burden of worrying about achievements all you need to do is, as a Soldier, try and get the weapon kills achievements (especially for Assault Rifle, Shotgun and Sniper Rifle - Pistol is a non-issue as all classes use it) and get your first two ally cheevos. Everything else can be done in your 2nd (or 3rd) run through. |

Without going too in-depth...
These are the missions I've completed so far: Prologue: Find the Beacon Citadel: Expose Saren Citadel: Garrus Citadel: Wrex Find Liara T'Soni
Assignments: Citadel: Presidium Prophet
Think I'll be good for the asari ally achievement (and/or any others) if I proceed with the same squad from here on out?
And thanks Vexovexee, the overview of the squadmates and where to group them in terms of usage is really helpful. I was thinking Ashley and Liara for my first playthrough but maybe I'll use a hybrid and a pure. Liara and one of the other three, I guess it doesn't matter much.
EDIT: I'm thinking these for my playthroughs...
Liara - Garrus (Normal) Ashley - Kaiden (Hardcore) Tali - Wrex (Insanity)
Anything inherently wrong with that lineup? Every run has a little bit of everything, though me being a Soldier and Ashley having no other discernible talents will probably make that one tricky. |

| I'd save garrus for insanity as he is one of the better teammates and use tali for hardcore as both of these people add overshields to the mako |

So...
Liara - Kaiden (Normal) Tali - Wrex (Hardcore) Ashley - Garrus (Insanity)
How about that? This is kinda fun. |

You'll need to go well into a 2nd playthrough with the same character to get to lvl 60, it's not possible to hit max lvl in one.
The way ME 1 is set up, you'd be wise to use either a soldier or infiltrator for your insanity playthrough. Choose commando specialization, it allows you to keep marksman (makes pistols the best dps weapon) and immunity (very high damage reduction) up all the time. This will make your infil or soldier able to withstand hits that are instakills on other classes. Don't fight in the mako, it's a death trap on higher difficulties. With immunity on you have at least 10 times more effective hit points than the mako.
Biotics are nice, but works just as well when triggered off companions. The tech stuff is pretty useless for damage on insanity, so I'd use the infil just so you can unlock stuff without having to bring a companion just for that. Achievements for using stuff a million times can be spammed on the mako or terminals in the citadel, so you don't have to play boring or weak classes for long. :)
Also, don't spend any points in renegade or paragon. You get 4 points for free per playthrough if you max them. Glitches exist to make this easy, google provides further instructions.
As for subsequent games, you're allowed to choose another class when loading up for instance a soldier from ME1 into ME2.
I hope the above makes sense and can help you along a bit. :) |
