You finally get that new game you've been dying for. You rush home, struggle to tear off the plastic, pop in the disc, and dive into the new experience that awaits. Then the main menu comes up and asks you to select your difficulty level...
What do you choose and why? Sound off in the comments. Let's see how many of us go for it all on the first try and how many of us take the easy way out.
Poll: What difficulty do you play a game on for your first playthrough?
8.6% - Easiest available
3.3% - Easy
31.6% - Medium
6.1% - Hard
17.7% - Hardest available
32.7% - It depends

| I always select Easiest Available. I don't want to spend the entirety of playing my first game dead. |

| Most games have a normal/recommend level (usually medium) and I go with that. |

It really depends on the game. If it's a whore game that requires the hardest difficulty for minimum playthroughs then I'll do that. If it's something I've been looking forward to then I'll usually do medium, unless I know it's easy on medium and go straight for hard.
Saying that, recently, I've been coerced into starting rather difficult games on the hardest available difficulty in co-op. |

Achievements dictate this somewhat for me, so I chose "It depends".
If I need to play on a certain difficulty for an achievement and it's unlocked from the beginning, I'll likely play that difficulty. Otherwise, my default is normal/medium. |
But if the silence takes you, then I hope it takes me too. |

| It depends. If a game requires two playthroughs and the first can be on any difficulty, I'll choose the easiest. No reason to make it harder for myself. In other situations, it depends on how hard I perceive the game to be and whether there are rewards for playing on harder difficulties, like better loot and more experience in an RPG for example. I'll play hard in that case, but I will otherwise play on medium. I usually only default to easy if it's a genre I'm not good at (fighters). |

"Depends"
90% of the time I prefer to go through on the easiest possible, my first playthrough of any game is always for the story and to get to grips with the game, achievements mean absolutely nothing to me other than being somewhat of a "to-do" list. I picked depends because sometimes, not very often, I leave the difficulty as is. |

| If it's from a series I've already played then I'll play it on Hard; if it's completely new to me I'll play it on Normal. |

I used to do hardest available to get difficulty-specific achievements out of the way in the shortest playthroughs required however I found myself loathing games and being unable to enjoy the game doing that.
I now play on Hard difficulty (or Normal, if Hard is the hardest available) so that I can learn the game and enjoy it, while preventing myself from getting bored of the difficulty. |

| It definitely depend with me, if it is a game like call of duty or battlefield, then usually I pick the hardest or second hardest difficulty. But if it say an RPG the I will normally go on the default difficulty then increase or decrease it depending if it is too hard or easy. |

| It depends if it is easy on hard and is enjoyable, like medal of honor, but on gears I usually play on normal on solo or hardcore with friends and then do insane. |

It really depends on if it's a genre I'm not exactly comfortable with, shooter would go on normal, but action/adventure games would go on the hardest I can play, saying that I started Ninja Gaiden 2 on the easiest |

It depents on the achievement.
If for the achievements all you need to do is complete the game with no difficulty required I'll pick easy.
If the difficulty achievements stack I'll start on the harderst dificulty.
And if the difficulty achievements don't stack I'll start with easy (and do the collectibles on that difficulty if there are any) and work my way up to the harder difficulties. |

| I always go straight in at the deep end unless I have to play it through 3 or 4 times for achievements anyway. I still normally go for the hardest though. |

| I usually go for Hard if the game has a difficulty above that (which most of the games I play do, but you need to unlock it). That way, I can both have fun with the story, without spending 90% of my time behind cover, recovering health, and knock out one or two difficulty related achievements, and it also gives me a chance to get used to the slightly harder AI. |
Feel free to PM me about the GTA IV walkthrough, or any problems you're having with the game. |

| It depends. If I've played a game from the series, I may go for the harder setting. If I want to blast through a game, I'll pick easy. If I'm feeling lazy, I'll pick easy. |

Given the choice I'd always just play on the easiest, but unfortunately games like COD force me to have to do the hardest for the achievements, which honestly often just completely ruins the game for me and I end up hating every minute of it and can't wait until it's done :( |
