How much should grinding, takes-forever-to-get achievements be worth? I'll use this:
as my exaple.
On TA its value is 112, but its acutall gamerscore value is only 30. Is 30 really high enough to make the time involved worth the effort? Killing even 10,000 enemies isn't easy in most games, and 53k+ is nuts. What point value would make this achievement worth the time?

Seems like a poor example, because it really only takes a few hours. How about:
The Veteran Gear achievement in Gears of War 2 worth 162 pointsReach level 100 and win a match on each of the 4 Snowblind Map Pack maps (not Custom)

| Sorry N0RVY, I should have been more clear. I'm thinking of single player achievements, I'm not a fan of MP achievements especially when they are crazily difficult to get. And while Trail of Corpses might only take a few hours, it still sends the player shooting, or in this case carving, their way to what could be considered a ridiculous number of kills. Those hours could be spent playing another game and getting multiple achievements which total a greater score than the single achievement in question. |

All these achievements do is test our tolerance for mindless, repetetive, and excessive bullcrap. Not sure if that makes it worth more or less though. |

| It only makes sense that some dev/s cook up retarded achievements like this to keep you playing. You used to be able to Glitch Vet. Gear though, I am level 55 in GOW2 and have everything but seriously 2.0, which I am only 1/10th of the way to getting, after all this time. They want you to keep grinding to get it, they want you to keep playing THEIR game. |

^ I have 705 hours logged in GOW2....I am almost level 73....If that is an admission of glitching that achievement, I really dislike you right now.
Also...edit: this achievement, I never noticed the l4d/dead rising reference here. And as stated earlier, the ratio itself is your reward man. |

The two worst grinds I have is..
"subverted because the game is fun, but ramped up because I only had around 3,000 after getting every other achievement"
and
^ This one was a real pain in the ass, it takes nearly 15 hours of grinding using the fastest method available. If you just run through the whole game each time it would take up to 50 hours.
That said, there are worse grinds out there *looks at AC4A*. But really, I dislike grinding acheivements in their entirety, they still should only be worth a medium amount of gamerscore at most. Leave the high scores for the very difficult tasks. |

This took me well over 400 hours for a whopping 10 gamerscore. |

| That is kind of what I'm talking about Avatar. It takes hours of work to get these achievements w/o glitching, so why shouldn't they be worth more than 10 - 30 points? On TA at their worth is higher, but if I understand the process correctly (please correct me if I get this wrong), the "value" is based on the number of people on TA who have the achievement / the number of total TA users. Most people aren't willing to spend that time grinding away to get those achievements, keeping the number of people who have them low and making them serve as what...bragging rights? I've never been much of one for bragging, so maybe I'm just missing the point. |

If you want to complain that these sorts of things even exist then boy am I there with ya! Things like Trail of Corpses don't bother me so much since they're cumulative with multiple playthroughs and that's actually a bad example since it's easy enough to do once you steal a helicopter and blow the enemies to hell. Before I traded it in to pick up a new game I was at some 33k kills and I hadn't even spent 25 hours on the game.
The bad ones would be the JRPG ones. Looking at games like Infinite Undiscovery, the beta of Star Ocean the Xbox got and Last Remnant... urgh. So much wasted time there. |
Looking to Boost: Gears of War 1 & 2, RE5: Vs. Mode, Army of Two |

I'm with Misfit on this one. My problem isn't how much I am awarded for those insane grinding achievements...Its the fact that they exist in the first place. By all means, give me achievements for completeing some seriously tough challenges and difficulty levels, because underneath the frustration I may endure, I will come away with something that really feels worth my time and effort. Something that not just any gamer can get. But the games that require me to put countless hours of mind numbing grinding in without any sort of legitimate challenge or variety involved...It is those that just make me feel like a damn robot. And what sickens me the most is that I will still waste time going for some of them like a complete fool :( |

| If the developers of the game are putting these type of achievements in to their games to keep you playing then I find them counter productive. I've played a few games that I enjoyed until I've gone for a grinder which totally ruined the experience, leaving me never wanting to play the game again. |

| I'm surprised that Rumble Roses XX hasn't been mentioned yet... I think I just hit the 1/2 way mark @ 123 hours and this is using the 17 second Tag Match method. One day I'll have my First Game played on the X360 @ 100% |

Grinding cheeves are no fun, all they do is hurt someone. :D
But seriously (lol) you could take two angles on this, maybe more, but it either shows you're persistent or it shows you're borderline insane. Same thing over and over again hoping to _achieve_ different results..
This thread is too punny...
